1 Who has believed {he'emin: to trust as reliable} our report, and to whom has the arm of the LORD {YHWH, Saving Power} been revealed?
2 He grew up before Him {YHWH, Sovereign Witness} like a sapling {yonek: tender shoot} and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form nor majesty, and when we saw Him, there was no appearance that we should desire Him.
3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows {machovot: deep pain} and acquainted with sickness. And as one from whom people hide their faces, He was despised, and we did not esteem {chashav: consider valuable} Him.
4 Surely He has borne our illnesses {cholayenu: physical diseases} and carried our pains; yet we considered Him stricken, smitten by God {Elohim, Divine Judge}, and afflicted.
5 Yet he was pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities; it was the chastisement {musar: punitive discipline} of our peace {shalom: restored relationship} that fell upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray {ta'inu: strayed away}; each one has turned to his own way; and the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge} laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed {niggash: severe injustice} and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a sheep led to the slaughter, and like a ewe before her shearers she remained silent {ne’elamah: no response}, so he did not open his mouth.
8 By oppressive detention {otzer: oppressive detention} and by judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered {yesochach: gave thought} it? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people, a blow fell upon him.
9 And his grave was assigned with the wicked, and with a rich man in his deaths, although he had done no violence {chamas: ruthless harm}, and there was no deceit {mirmah: crafty lie} in his mouth.
10 Yet the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Purpose} was pleased to crush him and made him suffer; when his soul is set as a guilt offering {asham: atoning offering}, he will see his offspring, he will prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD will succeed in his hand.
11 From the toil {me‘amal: exhausting labor} of his soul he will see and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify {yatzdiq: declare righteous} the many, and their iniquities he will bear.
12 Therefore I {YHWH, Portion Giver} will allot him a portion among the many, and he will divide the spoil with the mighty; for he poured out his soul {nefesh: life essence} to death, and was numbered with the transgressors. Yet he bore the sin of many and interceded for the transgressors.
