1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD {YHWH, Heard in Distress} his God {elohav: Personal Deity} from the belly of the fish.
2 And he said, “I called out in my distress to the LORD {YHWH, Deliverer}, and He answered me; from the belly of Sheol {sheol: underworld realm} I called for help, and You heard my voice.”
3 And You {YHWH, Righteous Chastener} cast me into the deep {metzulah: abyss depths}, in the heart of the seas; the flood surrounded me, all Your breakers and Your waves passed over me.
4 And I said, “I am cast out from before Your {YHWH, Omniscient Watcher} eyes; yet I will again look toward Your holy temple {heikhal: sanctuary}.”
5 Waters surrounded me up to the soul {nefesh: life essence}; the deep encompassed me, seaweed {suf: sea plant} was wrapped around my head.
6 To the bases of the mountains I went down; the earth, with its bars around me, held me fast forever; yet You brought up my life from the pit {mishshachat: deadly ruin}, O LORD {YHWH, Covenant Rescuer}, my God {Elohai, Personal Savior}.
7 When my soul was growing faint within me, I remembered the LORD {YHWH, Deliverer}, and my prayer came to You, to Your holy temple {heikhal: sacred dwelling}.
8 Those who pay regard to vain idols {havlei: worthless things} forsake their own mercy {chasdam: steadfast love}.
9 But I, with a voice of Thanksgiving {todah: vocal worship}, will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is of the LORD {YHWH, Deliverance Giver}.
10 And the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Speaker} spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto the dry land {yabashah: firm ground}.
