1 The leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the remainder of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten to dwell in Jerusalem, the holy city {ir hakodesh: dedicated place}, and the remaining nine groups {yadot: divisions} lived in the other cities.
2 And the people blessed {barakh: invoked favor} all the men who volunteered to dwell in Jerusalem {yerushalayim: city of peace}.
3 And these are the heads{rashei: district officials} of the province who dwelt in Jerusalem. But in the towns of Judah each man dwelt in his own inheritance{baachuzzato: family allotment} in their towns—the Israelites, the priests, the Levites, the temple servants, and the descendants of Solomon’s servants.
4 And in Jerusalem {Yerushalayim: sacred city} there dwelt those from the sons {banim: family divisions} of Judah and from the sons of Benjamin. From the sons of Judah: Athaiah, son of Uzziah, son of Zechariah, son of Amariah, son of Shephatiah, son of Mahalalel, from the sons of Perez.
5 And Maaseiah, son of Baruch, son of Kol-Hozeh {kol-chozeh: all seer}, son of Hazaiah, son of Adaiah, son of Joiarib, son of Zechariah, son of the Shilonite {ha-shiloni: descendant of Shelah}.
6 All the sons {bnei-perets: lineage designation} of Perez who lived {hayoshvim: continuous residence} in Jerusalem were four hundred sixty-eight men of valor.
7 And these are the sons {benei: direct descent} of Benjamin {Binyamin: tribal progenitor}: Sallu, son of Meshullam, son of Joed, son of Pedaiah, son of Kolaiah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ithiel, son of Jeshaiah.
8 And after him {acharav: narrative connector}, Gabbai and Sallai, nine hundred twenty-eight {meot: grouping hundreds}.
9 And Joel son of Zikri was their overseer {pakid: administrative official}, and Judah son of Hassenuah was second {mishneh: deputy office} over the city.
10 From the priests {kohanim: ordained ministers} were Yedaiah the son {ben: family line marker} of Joiarib and Jakin.
11 Seraiah, son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, the official {negid: Temple Overseer} of the house of God {Elohim, True God}.
12 And their brothers, doers of the work {hamelakhah: sacred service} for the house {bayit: Temple}, were eight hundred twenty-two; and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pelalyah, the son of Amzi, the son of Zechariah, the son of Pashchur, the son of Malkiyah.
13 And his brothers {echav: kinship leaders}, heads {rashim: family authorities} of fathers’ houses, two hundred forty-two; and Amashsai son of Azarel, son of Ahzai, son of Meshillemoth, son of Immer.
14 And their brothers were mighty men of valor {gibbo rei-chayil: courageous warriors}, numbering 128. The overseer {pakid: appointed leader} over them was Zabdiel, the son of the great ones.
15 From the Levites {ha-leviyyim: priestly tribe} came Shemaiah {shemaiah: heard by Yah}, the son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, and the son of Bunni.
16 And Shabbethai and Jozabad, two of the heads of the Levites, were over the outside work {melakhah: Service Tasks} of the house of God {Elohim, the true God}.
17 And Mattaniah son of Mica, son of Zabdi, son of Asaph, leader {rosh: primary leader} at the beginning who gave thanks in prayer; and Bakbukiah, second {mishneh: appointed deputy} among his brothers; and Abda son of Shammua, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun.
18 All the Levites {leviyim: priestly clan} in the holy {qodesh: consecrated} city numbered 284.
19 And the gatekeepers {ha-shoʿarim: official guardians}—Akkub, Talmon, and their brothers {va-acheihem: familial associates}, the ones guarding at the gates—numbered one hundred seventy-two men.
20 And the rest {ushe'ar: remaining population} of Israel, the priests, and the Levites were in all the towns of Judah, each in his own inheritance {nachalah: allotted land}.
21 And the temple servants {netinim: faithful stewards} lived in the Ophel {ophel: fortified enclave}, and Ziha and Gishpa were over the temple servants.
22 And the overseer {pakid: appointed leader} of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi, son of Bani, son of Hashavyah, son of Mattanyah, and son of Mikha, from the sons of Asaph the singers, for the service at the house of God {Elohim, the true God}.
23 For the king’s {ha-melekh: royal authority} command was upon them, and an ordinance {amanah: assigned duty} was placed on the singers concerning the daily matter.
24 And Pethahiah son of Meshezabel, from the descendants {mibnei: tribal lineage} of Zerah son of Judah, was at the king’s hand in every matter {davar: affair} concerning the people.
25 And to the villages {chatserim: unwalled rural communities} in their fields some of the sons of Judah {Yehudah: tribal allotment} lived in Kiriath Arba and its daughter settlements, in Dibon and its daughter settlements, and in Jekabzeel and its villages.
26 And in Jeshua, and in Moladah {moladah: Judah town}, and in Beth Pelet {beit: house of Pelet}.
27 In Hazar Shual {hatzar: settlement site} and in Beersheba and in its villages {noteyha: subordinate settlements}.
28 And in Ziklag, in Mekonah {mekonah: a town}, and in its settlements {vnoteha: surrounding villages}.
29 At Ein-Rimmon {ein-rimmon: spring of Rimmon} and at Zorah and at Jarmuth {yarmut: fortified town}.
30 Zanoah, Adullam and their villages {chatzer: rural settlements}, Lachish and its fields, Azekah and its settlements, and they encamped {vayachanu: pitched camp} from Beersheba as far as the Valley of Hinnom.
31 And the descendants of Benjamin {Binyamin: right-hand son} lived in Geba, Mikmash, Aiah, and Bethel, together with its settlements {benoteha: dependent villages}.
32 At Anathoth {Anatot: priests’ village}, at Nob {Nov: city adjacent to Jerusalem}, and at Ananiah.
33 Hazor {Chatzor: fortified settlement}, Ramah, and Gittaim {Gittaim: twin village}.
34 Hadid, Zeboim {tsevo’im: plural toponym}, Neballat {neballat: single fortified town}
35 Lod and Ono and the Valley {gei: valley depression} of the Craftsmen {charashim: skilled artisans}.
36 And from the Levites {ha-leviyim: hereditary temple ministers} divisions {machlekot: administrative clans} of Judah were assigned to Benjamin.
