1 And it came to pass after the plague that the LORD {YHWH, Judge and Restorer} spoke to Moses and to Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest {kohen: Set-Apart Mediator}, saying:

2 Lift up {se’u: formal census command} the heads {rosh: individual persons} of all the assembly of the sons of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by the house of their fathers; all who go out to the army in Israel.

3 And Moses and Eleazar the priest {kohen: sacred official} spoke to them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan opposite Jericho, saying {lemor: delivering proclamation}.

4 From twenty years old and upward, as the LORD {YHWH, Law-Giver} commanded Moses and the sons of Israel, those who went out from the land of Egypt {eretz: territory of bondage}.

5 Reuben was the firstborn {bekhor: firstborn son} of Israel; the sons {benei: family lines} of Reuben were Hanok—the clan of the Hanokite—and Pallu—the clan of the Palluite.

6 The clan {mishpachat: extended kinship unit} of Hezron, the Hezronite {ha-khetsroni: descendant of Hezron}; and the clan of Karmi, the Karmite.

7 These were the clans of the Reubenite {hareuveni: descendant of Reuben}, and their numbered ones {pekudeihem: registered men} were 43,730.

8 And the sons of Pallu {Pallu: clan ancestor} were Eliab {Eliav: clan representative}.

9 And the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram; these are Dathan and Abiram, appointed ones of the assembly {keriei: designated leaders}, who contended against Moses and against Aaron in the company of Korah when they incited against the LORD {YHWH, Divine Judge}.

10 And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah when the assembly {edah: community gathering} died, and as the fire consumed the 250 men, and they became a sign {nes: portent of warning}.

11 But the sons of Korah {Qorach: patriarch’s name} did not die {metu: physical death}.

12 The sons of Simeon {Shim‘on: tribe ancestor} were organized by their clans {mishpachot: family divisions}: of Nemuel, the Nemuelite clan; of Jamin, the Jaminite clan; of Jakin, the Jakinite clan.

13 The Zerahite {zarakhi: descendant of Zerah} clan from Zerah; the Shaulite {shauli: descendant of Shaul} clan from Shaul.

14 These are the clans {mishpechot: tribal divisions} of the Simeonite, numbering twenty-two {shenayim ve-esrim: additive dual numeral} thousand two hundred.

15 The sons of Gad by their clans {mishpacha: extended family units}—through Tsephon, the Tsephonite; through Chaggi, the Haggite {haggiti: descendant of Chaggi}; through Shuni, the clan of the Shunite.

16 The clan of Ozni {Ozni: ancestral head}—the Oznite clan; the clan of Eri {Eri: ancestral head}—the Erite clan.

17 For Arod {Arod: Ancestral Founder}, the clan {mishpachat: Lineage Group} of the Arodites; for Areli, the clan of the Arelites.

18 These are the clans of the sons of Gad according to their musterings {lifkudeihem: tribal enrollments}; forty thousand and five hundred {arbaim elef vachamesh meot: 40,500 by Hebrew reckoning}.

19 The sons of Judah {Yehudah: tribal ancestor} were Er and Onan, but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan {Kena‘an: western region}.

20 And the sons of Judah {Yehudah: praised one} were organized into clans {mishpechotām: family divisions}: the clan of Shelah the Shelanite; the clan of Perez the Perezite; and the clan of Zerah the Zerahite.

21 And the sons of Perez {perets: genealogical branch} were: of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronite {hetsroni: subtribal lineage}; and of Hamul, the clan of the Hamulite.

22 These are the clans {mishpechot: tribal divisions} of Judah; those numbered {lifkudeihem: census tally} were seventy-six thousand five hundred.

23 The sons of Issachar {Yissachar: tribal ancestor} according to their clans {mishpechotam: sub-tribal groups}: Tola—the clan of the Tolaite, and Puvah—the clan of the Punite.

24 To Jashub, the clan {mishpachat: clan structure} of the Jashubite {hayashuvi: gentilic adjective}; to Shimron, the clan of the Shimronite.

25 These were the families of Issachar {yissakhar: he brings reward} according to their enrolled numbers; 64,300 {arbaa ve-shishim elef ushelosh meot: Hebrew number composition} in total.

26 The sons of Zebulun {Zevulun: tribal progenitor} by their clans {mishpachot: extended lineage units}: of Sered, the Seredite clan; of Elon, the Elonite clan; of Yachleel, the Yachleelite clan.

27 These are the families of the Zebulunite {hazevuloni: descendant of Zebulun}; according to those counted {lifkudeihem: registered in the census}, there were sixty thousand and five hundred.

28 The sons of Joseph {Yosef: tribal ancestor} by their clans {mishpachah: extended family groups} were Manasseh and Ephraim.

29 The sons of Manasseh {Menasheh: tribal ancestor}: of Makir, the clan of the Makirite; and Makir fathered {holid: direct lineage} Gilead; of Gilead, the clan of the Gileadite.

30 These were the sons of Gilead: Iezer {I’ezer: God Helps}, the clan of the Iezerite; Helek {Helek: Apportioned Portion}, the clan of the Helekite.

31 And Asriel, the clan of the Asrielite {asri’eli: descendant of Asriel}, and Shechem, the clan of the Shechemite {shikhmi: descendant of Shechem}.

32 And Shemida {shmida: ancestral founder}, the clan {mishpakhat: lineage group} of the Shemidaite, and Hepher, the clan of the Hepherite.

33 Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, had no sons but only daughters{banot: Female Descendants}; and the names{shemot: Collective Listing} of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah, and Tirzah.

34 These were the clans {mishpechot: kinship divisions} of Manasseh, and their counted ones {pekudim: census registers} were 52,700.

35 These are the sons of Ephraim {efrayim: tribal patriarch} according to their clans {mishpachat: extended families}: of Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahite; of Becher, the clan of the Becherite; of Tahan, the clan of the Tahanite.

36 And these were the sons {bnei: direct descendants} of Shuthelah: through Eran, the Eranite clan {mishpachat: tribal circle}.

37 These were the families of the sons of Ephraim according to their number {lifkudeihem: by precise enumeration}, 32,500. These were the sons of Joseph {Yosef: God increases} according to their families.

38 The sons of Benjamin {binyamin: son of the right hand} by their clans: of Bela, the clan {mishpachat: kin group} of the Belaite; of Ashbel, the clan of the Ashbelite; of Ahiram, the clan of the Ahiramite.

39 Through Shupham, the clan {mishpachat: extended kinship unit} of the Shuphamite {shuphammi: clan descendant}; through Hupham, the clan of the Huphamite.

40 And the sons of Bela {Bela: eponymous ancestor} were Ard and Naaman; the clan {mishpachat: kinship group} of the Ardite and the clan of the Naamite.

41 These are the sons of Benjamin {Binyamin: son of the right hand} according to their clans, and their numbered ones {pekudim: organized census} totaled 45,600.

42 These are the sons of Dan {Dan: tribal ancestor} according to their clans: of Shuham, the clan of the Shuhamite {shuhami: Shuhamite clan}. These are the clans of Dan according to their clans.

43 All the families {mishpechot: genealogical divisions} of the Shuhamite according to their number {lifkudeihem: enrolled totals} were sixty-four thousand and four hundred.

44 The descendants of Asher {Asher: tribal ancestor} according to their clans {mishpechotam: social divisions} were: through Yimnah, the clan of the Yimnite; through Yishvi, the clan of the Yishvite; and through Beriah, the clan of the Beriite.

45 Of the sons {banim: direct male descendants} of Beriah, of Heber the clan {mishpachat: kinship group} of the Heberite, and of Malkiel the clan of the Malkielite.

46 And the name {shem: title label} of the daughter of Asher was Serah {sarakh: distinguished matriarch}.

47 These were the clans of the sons of Asher {Asher: founding ancestor}; according to their census registration {lifkudeihem: recorded enrollment}, they numbered 53,400.

48 The descendants of Naphtali {naftali: tribal ancestor} by their clans: of Yachzeel, the clan of the Yachzeelite {mishpachat: kinship grouping}; and of Guni, the clan of the Gunite.

49 Of Yetser, the clan {mishpachat: extended family group} of the Yetserite; of Shillem, the clan of the Shillemite {hashlilemi: Shillemite descendants}.

50 These are the clans {mishpechot: clan subdivisions} of Naphtali {naftali: tribal territory}; according to their clans, the ones numbered among them were 45,400.
