1 And it happened, at the time of the returning {teshuvat: year’s turn} of the year, at the time of the going out of the kings, that Joab led the force of the army and devastated the land of the sons of Ammon. Then he came and besieged Rabbah {rabbah: Ammonite capital}. But David was staying in Jerusalem. And Joab struck Rabbah and overthrew it.
2 And David took the crown from the head of their king, and it was found to weigh a talent {kikkar: ancient weight} of gold, and in it was a precious stone {even: costly gem}. It was set upon David’s head, and he brought out much plunder from the city.
3 And as for the people who were in it, he brought them out and assigned them to work with saws {meggerah: large cutting tools}, and with sharp tools of iron, and with axes. Thus David did to all the cities of the sons of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem {Yerushalayim: city of peace}.
4 And it happened after this, that war {milchamah: conflict confrontation} arose in Gezer with the Philistines. Then Sibbekai the Hushathite struck {hikkah: decisive blow} Sippai, from the descendants of the Rephaim, and the Philistines were subdued.
5 And again, there was a battle with the Philistines, and Elhanan son of Yair struck Lahmi, the brother of Goliath the Gittite {gitti: inhabitant of Gath}, and the shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam {menor: large wooden bar}.
6 And there was again battle in Gath, and there was a man of great stature {middah: notable size} whose fingers were six on each hand and whose toes were six on each foot, twenty and four in total; and he also was born to Rapha {Rapha: clan of giants}.
7 He taunted {yacharef: mockingly provoked} Israel, and Jonathan, the son of Shimea, David’s brother, struck him down {vayakkehu: delivered a decisive blow}.
8 These descendants of the Rapha {rapha: line of giants} in Gath fell by the hand of David {David: king of Israel} and by the hand of his servants.
