1 When a man takes a woman and marries her, and it comes to pass, if she does not find favor {chen: personal favor} in his eyes, because he has found in her indecency {ervat davar: moral impurity}, then he shall write for her a certificate of divorce and put it in her hand, and send her away from his house.
2 And she departs from his house {mibbeito: former husband’s dwelling} and goes and becomes {vehayetah: status transition} the wife of another man.
3 And if the latter husband hates her {usne'ah: legal rejection} and writes her a certificate of divorce {keritut: divorce document}, gives it into her hand, and sends her away from his house, or if the latter husband who took her as his wife dies.
4 Her first husband, who sent her away {shillechah: divorced her}, is not permitted to take her back as his wife after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Lawgiver}. You shall not bring sin upon the land that the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance.
5 When a man takes a new wife, he must not go out with the army nor have any duty imposed upon him; he shall be free {naki: exempt from military service} in his household for one year, and he shall gladden {vesimakh: cause genuine joy} his wife whom he has taken.
6 No one shall take the millstones {rechayim: dual grinding stones} or even the upper millstone {rachev: upper grinding stone} as a pledge, for he would be taking a life as a pledge.
7 If a man is found kidnapping {gonev: seizing unlawfully} one of his brothers from among the sons of Israel and treats him as property and sells him, then that kidnapper must die, and you shall purge {uv’arta: remove completely} the evil from your midst.
8 Be very careful {hishamer: take heed} regarding an affliction of leprosy {tsara‘at: skin disease}, to observe thoroughly and to act according to all that the Levitical priests instruct you; just as I have commanded you, so you shall be careful to do.
9 Remember what the LORD your God {YHWH Elohecha, Disciplining Lord} did to Miriam {Miryam: prophetess and sister} on the journey, as you were coming out from Egypt.
10 When you lend to your neighbor {re‘a: fellow Israelite} any kind of loan, you must not enter his house to take the pledge {avot: security item}.
11 You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you are lending {noshe: creditor} will bring out the pledge {avot: security item} to you.
12 And if the man is poor {ani: one in poverty}, you shall not lie down with his pledge {baavot: security item}.
13 You must surely return the pledge to him at sunset so that he may lie down in his garment and bless you, and that will count as righteousness {tzedakah: covenant faithfulness} for you before the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Ethical Judge}.
14 Do not oppress a hired worker {sakhir: wage laborer} who is poor and needy, whether from among your brothers or from the sojourner {ger: resident foreigner} who is in your land within your gates.
15 You must give him his wage {sekhar: due compensation} on his day, and you must not let the sun set on him, for he is poor and his life depends on it; otherwise he may cry out against you to the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Advocate}, and there will be sin in you.
16 Fathers {avot: ancestral heads} shall not be put to death on account of their children, nor shall children be put to death on account of their fathers; each person shall be put to death for his own sin {chet: personal guilt}.
17 You shall not pervert justice {mishpat: legal decision} for a foreigner or an orphan, and you shall not take the garment of a widow {almanah: bereft woman} as a pledge.
18 And you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the LORD your God {YHWH Elohekha, Redeemer and Deliverer} redeemed you from there; therefore, I am commanding you to do this thing {davar: prescribed command}.
19 When you reap your harvest in your field and you forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not return to take it; it shall be for the sojourner {ger: resident alien}, for the orphan, and for the widow. In order that the LORD your God {YHWH Elohekha, Blessing Giver} may bless you in all the work of your hands.
20 When you beat your olive tree, do not go over the branches a second time {tefaʾer: glean thoroughly}; what remains shall be for the sojourner {ger: foreign resident}, the orphan, and the widow.
21 When you harvest your vineyard, you shall not glean {te’olel: gleaning leftovers} after you; it shall be for the foreigner {ger: resident outsider}, for the orphan, and for the widow.
22 You shall remember {zakharta: recall past} that you were a servant in the land of Egypt {mitsrayim: place of exile}; hence, I command you to do this.
