1 And the whole earth {kol haarets: entire inhabited world} shared one language {safa: shared speech} and unified words.
2 And as they journeyed {benasam: ongoing migration} onward from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar, and they settled there {sham: that exact place}.
3 And they said, each man to his fellow, “Come, let us form bricks {levenim: kiln fired blocks} and fire them completely.” And the brick served them in place of stone, and the bitumen {chemar: natural asphalt} served as their mortar.
4 And they said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name {shem: enduring reputation} for ourselves so that we are not scattered {nafuts: driven apart} across the face of the whole earth.”
5 And the LORD {YHWH, Divine Examiner} came down to inspect the city {ir: human settlement} and the tower that the children of mankind had built.
6 And the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Discerner} said, “Behold, they are one people, and one language {safah: unified speech} is for them all; and this is what they have begun to do, and now nothing they plan will be out of-reach for them.”
7 Come, let us go down {neredah: purposeful descent} and confuse their language there, so that a man will not understand the speech of his neighbor {re'ehu: close companion}.
8 So the LORD {YHWH, Disperser of Nations} scattered them from there over the face of all the earth {ha-arets: Whole Inhabited Land}, and they stopped building the city.
9 For this reason its name was called Babel, because there the LORD {YHWH, Disperser Of Peoples} confused the language {sefat: shared human speech} of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them over the face of all the earth.
10 This is the genealogy {toledot: genealogical record} of Shem. At one hundred years of age, Shem fathered Arpachshad two years after the flood {mabul: global flood}.
11 And Shem lived {vayechi: extended lifespan} five hundred years {shanah: measured years} after he fathered Arpachshad, and he fathered sons and daughters.
12 Arpachshad {arpakhshad: ancestral figure} lived for thirty-five years {shana: measured life-span} before he fathered Shelah.
13 And Arpachshad lived {vayechi: extended lifespan} 403 years after he fathered Shelah, and he fathered {vayyoled: produced descendants} sons and daughters.
14 And Shelah {Shelach: ancestral figure} lived thirty years {sheloshim shanah: measured span}, and he fathered Eber.
15 And Shelah {Shelach: Ancestral Link} lived 403 years {shalosh shanim ve-arba meot shanah: Three Plus Four-Hundred} after he fathered Eber, and he fathered sons and daughters.
16 And Eber lived thirty-four years {arba u-sheloshim: composite age number} and he fathered Peleg {yalad: genealogical begetting}.
17 And Eber {ever: post-flood patriarch} lived four hundred and thirty years after he fathered Peleg {peleg: marked by division}, and he fathered sons and daughters.
18 And Peleg {Peleg: division name} lived thirty years and fathered {yalad: ancestral begetting} Reu.
19 Peleg lived 209 years after fathering {holido: initiated new generation} Reu, and he produced sons {banim: male descendants} and daughters.
20 And Reu {Reu: genealogical ancestor} lived for thirty-two years and fathered {vayoled: initiated birth} Serug.
21 And Reu lived after {acharei: subsequent years} he fathered Serug two hundred and seven years, and he fathered {holido: continuing lineage} sons and daughters.
22 And Serug lived thirty years {shanah: counted seasons}, and he fathered Nahor {Nachor: key descendant}.
23 And Serug lived two hundred years {shanah: measured lifespan} after he fathered Nahor, and he fathered sons {banim: direct male descendants} and daughters.
24 And Nahor lived twenty-nine years {shanah: measured years}, and he fathered {yalad: ancestral link} Terah.
25 And Nahor {Nachor: ancestral patriarch} lived 119 years {shanah: remaining lifespan} after he begot Terah, and he begot sons and daughters.
26 And Terah lived seventy years {shivim shanah: full maturity age}, and he fathered Abram {Avram: Exalted Father}, Nahor, and Haran.
27 And here are the generations {toledot: family registers} of Terah {Terach: clan patriarch}. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran fathered Lot.
28 And Haran died before {penei: before the face} Terah his father, in the land of his birth {moladto: native region}, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
29 And Abram and Nahor took wives {nashim: formal marital partners} for themselves: Abram’s wife was named Sarai, and Nahor’s wife was named Milkah, the daughter {bat: direct female descendant} of Haran, the father of Milkah and the father of Yiskah.
30 Now Sarai {Sarai: Covenant Matriarch} was barren {aqarah: Unable to Conceive}; she had no child.
31 And Terah took Abram his son, along with Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, the wife of Abram his son. Then he led them out from Ur of the Chaldeans {Kasdim: southern Mesopotamian city} to go to the land of Canaan, but they came as far as Haran and dwelt there {sham: at that location}.
32 And Terah’s life lasted 205 years {shanah: measured life span}, and he died {vayamat: ended his days} in Haran.
