1 A proclamation {masa: prophetic announcement} about Moab: in the night Ar of Moab is destroyed and silenced {nidmah: brought to silence}; in the night Kir of Moab is destroyed and silenced.
2 He goes up to the house {habayit: temple shrine}, to Dibon, and to the high places for weeping. Over Nebo and over Medeba Moab wails {yeylil: loud lament}; every head is bald, and every beard is shorn.
3 In its streets they have girded themselves with sackcloth; on its rooftops and in its open squares every one {kullo: every individual} wails, going down in weeping {babechi: deep lamentation}.
4 Heshbon and Elealeh cried out; their voice was heard as far as Jahaz {yahatz: frontier post}. Therefore, Moab’s armed men shouted; his soul {nafsho: innermost being} trembled within him.
5 My heart cries out for Moab; her fugitives flee as far as Zoar, like a three-year-old heifer. For on the ascent {ma‘aleh: steep path} of Luhith they go in weeping {bivkhi: communal lament}; for on the road to Horonaim they raise a cry of destruction.
6 The waters of Nimrim will lie desolate {meshammot: laid waste}; for the grass has dried up {yavesh: dried up}, the tender grass has perished, and no green sprout survives.
7 Therefore the surplus {yitrah: what remains} they have gained, and what they have stored up, they will carry to the brook {nakhal: seasonal stream} of the willows.
8 For the cry has gone around the border of Moab {moav: ancient nation}, its wailing reaches Eglaim {eglayim: frontier settlement}, and the wailing continues at Beer Elim.
9 For the waters of Dimon are full of blood, yet I will bring more upon Dimon: a lion upon those who escape from Moab {moav: ancient nation east of Israel} and upon the remnant {sheerit: survivors after judgment} of the land.
