1 Then the LORD {YHWH, Camp Commander} addressed {vayedabber: authoritative declaration} Moses and Aaron with these words:
2 Each man shall encamp by his own standard {deghel: tribal banner}, with the banners of their ancestral house; the sons of Israel are to encamp all around, opposite the tent of meeting {ohel moed: appointed place of assembly}.
3 And those who encamp to the east, toward the sunrise, are under the standard {degel: tribal banner} of the camp {machaneh: organized formation} of Judah by their divisions. The leader of the sons of Judah is Nahshon son of Amminadab.
4 And his army, with their numbered ones {pekudim: registered men}, was seventy-four thousand six hundred {meot: units of one hundred}.
5 The tribe of Issachar will camp {chonim: organized encampment} beside them, and the leader for the sons of Issachar is Nethanel {Netanel: gift of God}, son of Zuar.
6 And his host {tseva: organized military group} and those enrolled {pekudav: officially recorded individuals} with him numbered fifty-four thousand and four hundred.
7 The tribe {matteh: tribal division} of Zebulun and the leader {nasi: tribal headship} for the sons of Zebulun is Eliab, son of Helon.
8 And his army {tseva: organized host} and his counted ones {pekudim: enrolled men} were 57,400.
9 All who were numbered {ha-pequdim: those counted for service} in the camp of Judah totaled 186,400 according to their divisions; first, they shall set out {rishonah: leading the march}.
10 The standard {degel: tribal banner} of the camp of Reuben {re'uven: firstborn son} shall be to the south according to their divisions, and the leader of the sons of Reuben is Elitzur son of Shedeur.
11 And his army {tseva: organized force} and those numbered with him were 46,500 {pekudav: official count}.
12 And those who camp {chonim: ordered encampment} beside him shall be the tribe of Simeon, and the leader {nasi: tribal chief} of the sons of Simeon is Shelumiel, son of Zurishaddai.
13 And his army {tseva: battle force} and their enrolled men {pekudim: counted members} totaled 59,300.
14 And the tribe {matteh: tribal division} of Gad and the leader of the sons of Gad was Elyasaf {Elyasaf: God adds}, son of Reuel.
15 And his army {tseva: organized camp} and those who were registered {pekudeihen: census listing} numbered 45,650 in total.
16 All the numbered men for the camp of Reuben {Reuven: Firstborn Tribe} were 151,450 for their companies {tsivotam: Military Divisions}, and they shall set out second.
17 And the tent of meeting {ohel-moed: appointed place} and the camp of the Levites {haleviyim: priestly tribe} will set out in the midst of the camps; just as they encamp, so they will set out, each person at his post under his standard.
18 The standard {degel: rallying point} of the camp of Ephraim by their divisions was to the west, and the leader {nasi: chief ruler} of the sons of Ephraim was Elishama son of Ammihud.
19 And his army, and their counted numbers {pekudim: muster roll}, were forty thousand and five hundred {arba'im elef va'chamesh me'ot: Hebrew numeric formation}.
20 And next to it, the tribe {matteh: population division} of Manasseh, and the leader {nasi': chief representative} of the sons of Manasseh is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.
21 And his division {tsava: organized military group} and their registered {pekudim: official muster count} number were thirty-two thousand and two hundred.
22 And next shall be the tribe {matteh: census division} of Benjamin, and the leader {nasi: chief or prince} of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan son of Gideoni.
23 And his army {utseva’o: division under command} and their numbered ones {pekudim: those appointed for service} were 35,400.
24 All the mustered {pekudim: enrolled warriors} of the camp of Ephraim numbered one hundred eight thousand and one hundred for their divisions {tsivotam: tactical units}, and they set out third.
25 The standard of the camp of Dan {Dan: tribal patriarch} was on the north for their divisions, and the leader of the children of Dan was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai {Ammishaddai: kinsman of Shaddai}.
26 And his army {tsava: martial host} and their registered ones {pequdim: officially enrolled} numbered 62,700.
27 And those camping beside him—the tribe {matteh: tribal subdivision} of Asher. The leader {nasi: chief authority} for the sons of Asher is Pagiel son of Okran.
28 And his host {tseva: military force} and their counted men {ufqudeihem: those enrolled} numbered 41,500.
29 And the tribe {matteh: tribal division} of Naphtali, and the leader for the sons of Naphtali, Ahira son {ben: family lineage} of Enan.
30 And his army {tsava: organized host}, and their mustered men {pekudim: those enrolled}, totaled fifty-three thousand four hundred.
31 All the counted ones {pekudim: census registration} in the camp of Dan numbered one hundred fifty-seven thousand six hundred. They will set out last, under their banners {digleihem: tribal standards}.
32 These are the numberings {pekudim: enrolled persons} of the sons of Israel according to their ancestral houses {bet avot: family clans}; the count of the camps by their divisions was six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty.
33 Yet the Levites were not numbered among the sons of Israel, just as the LORD {YHWH, Commanding Authority} commanded {tsivvah: ordered precisely} Moses.
34 So the sons of Israel did everything just as the LORD {YHWH, Order-Giver} commanded Moses; they camped under their standards {degel: tribal standard} and set out, each by his clans and by his fathers’ houses.
