1 And the LORD {YHWH, Lawgiver} spoke to Moses {Mosheh: one drawn out}, saying,
2 Command the sons of Israel {Yisra’el: covenant people} and you shall say to them, “When you come into the land of Canaan, this is the land that will fall to you as an inheritance {nachalah: designated portion}—the land of Canaan according to its borders.”
3 And the edge of the south {negev: arid region} will be yours from the wilderness of Zin on the side of Edom, and your southern boundary will be from the end of the Salt Sea {yam-hamelach: Dead Sea} eastward.
4 And the boundary will turn for you from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim {akrabbim: scorpions}, and it will cross to Zin. Then its extremities {totzeotav: boundary markers} will be south of Kadesh Barnea, and it will go out to Hazar-Addar and cross over to Azmon.
5 And the border will turn from Azmon {ʿAṣmon: boundary marker} to the brook of Egypt, and its goings out {totze’otav: termination points} will be to the sea.
6 And as your western border {gevul: territorial line}, the Great Sea {yam: Mediterranean Sea} and its coast shall be your boundary; this shall be your sea boundary.
7 This shall be your northern boundary: starting from the Great Sea {hayam hagadol: Mediterranean Sea}, you shall draw for yourselves a boundary line as far as Mount Hor {hor: designated mountain region}.
8 From Mount Hor{har: mountainous height}, you shall mark out{teta'u: precise surveying} to the entrance of Hamath, and the outgoings of the border will be at Zedad.
9 And the border shall extend to Ziphron, and its outgoings {totseotav: limits} shall be at Hazar Enan; this shall be for you the border of the north {safon: northern region}.
10 And you shall demarcate {vehitʾavitem: carefully set the boundary} for yourselves as an eastern border {ligvul: legal boundary}, from Hazar Enan to Shepham.
11 And the boundary {gevul: designated limit} will descend from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain, and the boundary will go down and strike the slope {ketef: incline} on the side of the Sea of Kinneret eastward.
12 And the boundary will go down along the Jordan, and its outgoings {totzotav: border endpoints} will be at the Salt Sea. This shall be the land for you {lachem: covenant possession}, with its boundaries all around.
13 And Moses {Mosheh, Lawgiver} commanded the children of Israel, saying, “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Grantor} commanded to give to the nine tribes and the half-tribe.”
14 Because the tribe of the sons {b’nei: genealogical branches} of Reuben, for the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the sons of Gad, for the house of their fathers, and half the tribe of Manasseh, have received their inheritance {nachalah: allotted portion}.
15 The two tribes and the half-tribe took their inheritance {nachalah: allotted portion} from across the Jordan at Jericho toward the sunrise {kedmah: sunrise direction}.
16 And the LORD {YHWH, Lawgiver} spoke to Moses {Mosheh: appointed leader}, saying,
17 These are the names {shemot: roster listing} of the men who shall assign the land to you as an inheritance: Eleazar the priest {ha-kohen: sacred minister} and Joshua son of Nun.
18 And you shall take one leader {nasi: chief representative} from each tribe to apportion {linchol: allot by lot} the land for inheritance.
19 And these are the names {shemot: individual identities} of the men for the tribe of Judah, Caleb {Kalev: faithful representative} son of Jephunneh.
20 And for the tribe {matteh: administrative division} of the sons {benei: lineage unit} of Simeon, Shemuel son of Ammihud.
21 For the tribe {mattēh: clan division} of Benjamin, Elidad {Elidad: clan representative} son of Kislon.
22 And for the tribe {matteh: clan division} of the sons of Dan, the leader {nasi: chief official} is Bukki son of Yogli.
23 For the descendants {livnei: genealogical designation} of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, the leader {nasi: appointed head} is Hanniel son of Ephod.
24 And from the tribe {matteh: clan unit} of the sons of Ephraim, the leader {nasi: tribal chieftain} was Kemuel the son of Shiptan.
25 And from the tribe of the sons of Zebulun, the leader {nasi: chief} Elizaphan {elitsafan: God has protected} son of Parnakh.
26 And for the tribe {matteh: Appointed Division} of the sons of Issachar, the leader {nasi: Appointed Head} was Paltiel son of Azan.
27 And for the tribe {matteh: tribal division} of the sons of Asher, the leader {nasi: chieftain} was Ahihud son of Shelomi.
28 And for the tribe {matteh: clan division} of the sons of Naphtali, the leader {nasi: tribal chief} is Pedahel son of Ammihud.
29 These are the ones whom the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Commander} commanded to allot the inheritance {lenachel: tribal allotment} to the sons of Israel in the land of Canaan.
