1 Then the heads of the fathers’ houses {avot: ancestral lineages} of the clan {mishpacha: tribal subdivision} of the sons of Gilead, the son of Makhir, the son of Manasseh, from the clans of the sons of Joseph, came near and spoke before Moses and before the leaders, the heads of the fathers’ houses of the sons of Israel.
2 And they said, “My lord, the LORD {YHWH, Lawgiver} commanded you to give the land as an inheritance {nachalah: permanent possession} by lot to the sons of Israel. And my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.”
3 And if they marry into another tribe of Israel, their inheritance {nachalah: ancestral portion} will be taken from our fathers’ inheritance and added {nosaf: transferred share} to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong, thereby diminishing our inheritance.
4 And if the Jubilee {yovel: year of release} occurs for the sons of Israel, then their inheritance will be added {venosefah: be added} to the inheritance of the tribe into which they become, and it will be subtracted from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.
5 And Moses commanded the Israelites at the command of the LORD {YHWH, Divine Lawgiver}, saying, “Thus the tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks rightly {ken: proper, correct}.”
6 This is the word which the LORD {YHWH, Lawgiver} commanded for the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, “They may become wives to whomever seems good in their eyes {be-einehem: personal judgment}; only to the family of their father’s tribe shall they become wives.”
7 And no inheritance of the sons of Israel shall transfer {tissov: be transferred} from one tribe to another, for every man {ish: individual member} among the Israelites shall cling to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
8 And every daughter who inherits land from any tribe of Israel shall be a wife {ishah: covenant partner} to someone within the clan of the tribe of her father, so that each Israelite may inherit {yiyirshu: legal entitlement} the inheritance of his fathers.
9 And no inheritance shall turn aside from one tribe to another tribe, for each of the tribes {mattot: clan divisions} of Israel must cling to its own inheritance {nachalah: allotted possession}.
10 Just as the LORD {YHWH, Lawgiver} commanded Moses {Mosheh: mediator of instruction}, so the daughters of Zelophehad did.
11 And Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milkah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, became {vatihyenah: legal status} wives to the sons of their father’s brothers {dodeihen: paternal cousins}.
12 From the clans of the sons of Manasseh, son of Joseph, they became wives {nashim: married women}, and their inheritance {nachalah: allotted portion} remained with the tribe of the clan of their father.
13 These are the commandments {mitzvot: binding instructions} and the ordinances that the LORD {YHWH, Lawgiver} commanded by the hand of Moses for the children of Israel in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan, at Jericho.
