1 But the Spirit {Pneuma, Divine Revealer} says expressly that in later times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and to doctrines of demons {daimonion: spiritual adversaries}.
2 In the hypocrisy {hypokrisei: outward pretense} of liars, whose own conscience {syneidesin: inner moral sense} has been seared.
3 Forbidding to marry and to abstain from foods that God {Theos, Gracious Creator} created for receiving with thanksgiving {eucharistias: grateful praise} by those who believe and who have known the truth.
4 For every creature of God {Theos, Generous Creator} is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving {eucharistia: grateful acknowledgment}.
5 For it is sanctified by the word of God {Theos, Sanctifying Authority} and by prayer {enteuxis: petition or intercession}.
6 By reminding the brothers of these things, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus {Christos Iesous, Served Master}, being nourished in the words of the faith and of the good teaching {didaskalia: sound instruction}, which you have closely followed.
7 But reject profane and old-womanish myths {mythos: deceptive tales}, and train yourself for godliness {eusebeia: reverent devotion}.
8 For bodily exercise {gymnasia: disciplined training} is profitable for a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of life {zoe: true spiritual vitality} for the present and for the one to come.
9 The saying is faithful {pistos: firmly reliable}, and worthy of all acceptance {apodoche: full reception}.
10 For to this end we labor and are reproached, because we have set our hope upon the living God {Theos, Living Savior}, who is the Savior of all people, especially of believers {pistoi: trusting followers}.
11 Command these things {tauta: prior instructions} and teach {didaske: give instruction} them.
12 Let no one despise you because of your youth, but become a model for the believers {pistos: trusting followers} in word, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity {hagneia: moral cleanness}.
13 Until I come, devote yourself to the reading {anagnosei: public Scripture recitation}, to exhortation, and to teaching {didaskalia: doctrinal instruction}.
14 Do not neglect the gift {charisma: divinely imparted ability} that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy {propheteia: inspired declaration} with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
15 Keep meditating on these things; continue in these, so that your progress {prokope: steady advancement} may be evident {phanera: openly visible} to all.
16 Give careful attention to yourself and to the teaching {didaskalia: doctrinal instruction}; persist in them. For by doing this, you will save both yourself and those who hear {akouontas: responsive hearers} you.
