1 Dinah, Leah’s daughter—whom Leah bore to Jacob—went out {vateitse: left her home} to look around among the daughters {bivnot: local young women} of the land.
2 Shechem, son of Hamor the Hivite and prince of the land {nesi: local ruler}, saw her; he took her, lay with her, and afflicted her {vayeanneha: violated and oppressed}.
3 His soul {nefesh: life essence} clung to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob; he loved the young woman and spoke to the heart {lev: inner being} of the young woman.
4 Then Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Take for me this girl {yaldah: unmarried youngster} as a wife {ishah: formal spouse}.”
5 Jacob {Yaakov: Family Patriarch} heard that Dinah, his daughter, had been defiled; but his sons were with his livestock {mikneh: wealth-producing animals} in the field, so Jacob stayed silent until they came back.
6 Hamor {chamor: personal name}, the father of Shechem, went out toward Jacob to converse {ledabber: conduct formal discussion} with him.
7 When they heard, Jacob’s sons came in from the field; the men were grieved, and it burned very greatly to them, because he had committed a disgrace {nevalah: covenant disgrace} in Israel by lying with the daughter of Jacob {bat-Yaakov: protected relative}, and such a thing is not to be done.
8 Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul {nafsho: inner life} of my son Shechem longs for your daughter {bat: young woman}; please give her to him for a wife.”
9 Make intermarriage {hitchatnu: form marital alliances} with us: give your daughters to us, and take {tikchu: receive as wives} our daughters for yourselves.
10 You may dwell with us, and the land will be before you {lifneichem: open for your use}; settle in it, trade in it, and acquire property {achaz: take possession} in it.
11 Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find {emtsa: seek earnestly} favor {khen: gracious approval} in your sight; whatever you say to me, I will give.”
12 Increase the bride-price greatly and set the gift {matan: dowry offering} upon me as you say, and I will give as you request; only give me the young woman {na'arah: unmarried girl} to be my wife.
13 The sons of Jacob {Yaakov: Covenant Forefather} answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit {mirmah: deliberate cunning}; they spoke this way because he had defiled Dinah, their sister.
14 They said to them, “We cannot do this—to give our sister to a man who has uncircumcision {orlah: foreskin condition}—for that is a reproach {kherpah: shameful disgrace} to us.”
15 Only {akh: exclusive condition} on this will we consent to you, if you become like us by circumcising {lehimol: covenant-cutting rite} every male among you.
16 Then we will give our daughters {benot: for marriage} to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves; we will dwell with you, and we will become one people {am: united community}.
17 But if you will not listen to us to be circumcised {himmol: join covenant sign}, then we will take our daughter {bitteinu: household daughter} and we will go.
18 Their words {divreihem: spoken proposals} were pleasing in the eyes of Hamor {chamor: local leader} and in the eyes of Shechem, son of Hamor.
19 The young man did not delay to do the matter, because he delighted {chafets: deeply desired} in the daughter of Jacob; and he was honored {nichbad: highly respected} above all the household of his father.
20 Hamor and Shechem his son went to the gate {sha'ar: central civic area} of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying {leimor: introducing formal speech}.
21 These men are friendly {shlemim: at peace, trustworthy} with us. Let them dwell in the land and trade in it, and look—the land is wide open {rakhavat-yadayim: exceedingly spacious} before them. We will take their daughters for ourselves as wives, and our daughters we will give to them.
22 Only by this will the men agree{yeotu: formally consent} to dwell with us and to become one people{leam echad: united community} with us: that every male among us be circumcised, just as they are circumcised.
23 Their livestock {miknehem: acquired herds} and their property, and all their animals—will they not be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will live among us {ittanu: as fellow residents}.
24 And all those who went out of the gate {sha'ar: civic meeting place} of his city listened to Hamor and to Shechem his son; and every male—all those who went out of the gate of his city—was circumcised {vayyimolu: ritual cutting of foreskin}.
25 On the third day, when they were in pain {koavim: suffering bodily affliction}, two of the sons of Jacob—Simeon and Levi, the brothers of Dinah—each took his sword; they came upon the city while it was secure {betakh: unsuspecting and unguarded} and killed every male.
26 They killed {harag: deliberate slaying} Hamor and Shechem his son by the edge of the sword, took Dinah {Dinah: endangered sister} from Shechem’s house, and went out.
27 The sons of Jacob {Yaakov: family patriarch} descended upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister {achotam: close female kin}.
28 They took their flocks {tsonam: sheep and goats}, their herds {bekaram: cattle stock}, their donkeys, and all that was in both the city and the field.
29 They took all their wealth {cheilam: material possessions}, and all their little ones, and their women—they took captive and plundered {vayavozzu: stripped of valuables} all that was in the house.
30 Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble {akartem: troubled me} on me, making me a stench {lehav’isheni: utterly despised} among the inhabitants of the land—among the Canaanites and among the Perizzites. I am few in number; they will gather against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my household.”
31 But they said, “Should he treat {yaʿaśśeh: act toward} our sister like a prostitute {hakzonah: sexually immoral woman}?”
