1 And it happened that, when Jesus {Iesous, Faithful Teacher} had finished all these words {logous: comprehensive teachings}, He said to His disciples,
2 You know that after two days the Passover {pascha: sacred festival} comes, and the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou, Coming Sacrifice} is handed over to be crucified.
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together into the courtyard {aule: inner court} of the high priest who is called {legomenos: publicly known as} Caiaphas,
4 And they consulted together in order that they might seize Jesus {Iesous, Threatened Messiah} by cunning {dolo: using deceitful means} and kill Him.
5 But they were saying, “Not during the feast {heorte: major pilgrimage festival}, so that no uproar {thorybos: public disturbance} might occur among the people.”
6 Now when Jesus {Iesous, Approaching Guest} was in Bethany, in the house {oikia: family dwelling} of Simon the leper,
7 A woman came to Him {Iesous, Honored Guest} having an alabaster flask of very precious ointment, and she poured it on His head as He was reclining {anakeimenos: customary meal posture}.
8 But when the disciples {mathetai: devoted learners} saw it, they were indignant, saying, “For what purpose is this waste {apoleia: costly misuse}?”
9 For this {touto: costly gift} could have been sold for a large amount and given to the poor {ptochos: those in desperate need}.
10 But Jesus {Iesous, Defending Lord} knew and said to them, “Why do you cause trouble {kopous: unnecessary harassment} for the woman? For she has performed a good work for Me.”
11 For you always have the poor {ptochos: materially needy} with you, but you do not always have Me {Iesous, Soon Departing Lord}.
12 For when she poured this ointment on My {Iesous, Accepting Burial} body, she has done it to prepare Me for burial {entaphiasai: funeral preparation}.
13 Truly, I {Iesous, All-Knowing Lord} say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of as a memorial {mnemosynon: lasting remembrance} to her.
14 Then one {heis: single member} of the twelve {dodeka: chosen disciples}, the one called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests.
15 He said, “What do you want to give me, and I will deliver Him {Iesous, Betrayed Savior} to you?” Then they set for him thirty pieces of silver {argyria: betrayal payment}.
16 And from that time he was seeking an opportunity {eukairian: favorable moment} in order that he might betray Him {Iesous, Rejected Messiah}.
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus {Iesous, Messianic Teacher}, saying, “Where do You wish that we should prepare for You to eat the Passover {pascha: covenant meal}?”
18 But He {Iesous, Passover Host} said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time {kairos: appointed moment} is near; at your house I am keeping the Passover with My disciples.’”
19 And the disciples did just as Jesus {Iesous, Divine Instructor} had commanded them, and they prepared the Passover {pascha: festival meal}.
20 And when evening {opsia: late part of the day} had come, He {Iesous, Table Leader} reclined at table with the twelve disciples.
21 And as they were eating, He {Iesous, Foreknowing Messiah} said, “Truly I say to you, one of you will betray Me {paradidomi: hand over for arrest}.”
22 And being deeply grieved, each one began to say to Him, “Surely {meti: expecting denial} not I, Lord {Kyrios, All-Knowing Master}?”
23 But He {Iesous, Identifier of Betrayer} answered and said, “The one who has dipped {embapto: briefly dip} his hand with Me in the dish, that one will betray Me.”
24 The Son of Man {huios tou anthropou, Messianic Title} indeed goes as it has been written concerning Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for him if that man had not been born {egennethe: brought into life}.
25 But Judas, the one delivering {paradidous: betraying} Him up, answered and said, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” Jesus {Iesous, Silent Sufferer} said to him, “You have said so.”
26 As they were eating, Jesus {Iesous, Covenant Meal Host} took bread {arton: staple food}, and having blessed it, He broke it, and, giving it to the disciples, He said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”
27 And having taken a cup, and having given thanks {eucharistesas: expressed gratitude}, He {Iesous, Covenant Mediator} gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.”
28 For this is My {Iesous, Covenant Sacrifice} blood of the covenant {diatheke: binding agreement}, which is being poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
29 But I {Iesous, Self-Giving Messiah} say to you, I will certainly not drink from now on of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in the kingdom of My Father {pater, Sovereign King}.
30 And after they had sung {hymneo: praise to God} a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives {elaion: olive trees}.
31 Then Jesus {Iēsous, Foretold Shepherd} says to them, “All of you will be caused to stumble because of Me this night; for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd {poimēn: spiritual leader}, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’”
32 But after I {Iesous, Foretelling Shepherd} am raised, I will go before you into Galilee {Galilaia: northern region in Israel}.
33 But Peter {Petros: outspoken disciple} answered and said to Him {Iesous, Forewarning Lord}, “Even if all are caused to stumble because of You, I will never be caused to stumble.”
34 Jesus {Iesous, Divine Foreteller} said to him, “Truly {amen: solemn affirmation} I say to you, that in this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”
35 Peter said to Him {Iesous, Foretelling Lord}, “Even if it is necessary for me to die with You, I will never deny You.” Likewise, all the disciples {mathetai: devoted learners} said the same.
36 Then Jesus {Iesous, Obedient Son} comes with them to a place called Gethsemane {gethsemane: olive press grove}, and He says to the disciples, “Sit here until I go over there and pray.”
37 And having taken along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He {Iesous, Suffering Messiah} began to be grieved {lupeisthai: filled with pain} and to be deeply troubled.
38 Then He {Iesous, Suffering Son} said to them, “My soul {psuche: inner being} is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and keep watch with Me.”
39 And having gone forward a little, He {Iesous, Obedient Son} fell {epesen: collapsed in anguish} upon His face, praying and saying, “My Father {Pater, Sovereign Will Giver}, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will {thelo: deliberate choice}, but as You will.”
40 And He {Iesous, Watchful Suffering Savior} came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and He said to Peter {Petros: designated leader}, “So, were you not able to keep watch {gregoreo: remain vigilant} with Me for one hour?”
41 Keep awake and pray, so that you do not enter into temptation {peirasmos: testing to stray}; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh {sarx: bodily human nature} is weak.
42 Again, having gone away a second time, He prayed, saying, “My Father {Pater mou, Filial Address}, if this is not able to pass away unless I drink it, let Your will {thelema: Sovereign Purpose} be done.”
43 And having come again, He {Iesous, Vigilant In Prayer} found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy {bebaremenoi: weighed down with fatigue}.
44 And, having left them again, He {Iesous, Faithful Sufferer} went away and prayed for the third {tritos: repeated time} time, saying the same word again.
45 Then He {Iesous, Resolute Sufferer} comes to the disciples and says to them, “Sleep on now and rest; behold, the hour {hora: appointed time} has drawn near, and the Son of Man is being delivered into the hands of sinners.”
46 Rise up, let us go; behold, the one who betrays {paradidomi: treacherously delivers} Me {Iesous, Willing Sacrifice} has come near.
47 And while He {Iesous, Resolute Savior} was still speaking, behold, Judas {Ioudas: betraying disciple}, one of the twelve, came, and with Him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48 But the one betraying Him {Iesous, Willing Sacrifice} gave them a sign {semeion: identifying signal}, saying, “Whomever I will kiss, He is the One; seize Him.”
49 And immediately, after coming up to Jesus {Iesous, Betrayed Messiah}, he said, “Greetings, Rabbi,” and kissed Him {katephilesen: fervent affection}.
50 But Jesus {Iesous, Submitting Messiah} said to him, “Friend {hetaire: associate}, do what you came for.” Then, having come near, they laid their hands upon Jesus and seized Him.
