Le verset s’ouvre par hannephesh {הַנֶּפֶשׁ | han-ne-feš} 'l’âme' associé à hachotet {הַחֹטֵאת | ha-ḥō-ṭēʾṯ} 'qui pèche', formant un groupe nominal relatif identifiant l’agent moral. Le pronom hi {הִיא | hîʾ} 'elle' reprend l’antécédent comme sujet, suivi du verbe tamut {תָמ֑וּת | tā-mûṯ} 'mourra', exprimant une certitude future en qal imperfectif.
