1 And the Philistines {pelishtim: coastal raiders} fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and the slain fell on Mount {har: high ground} Gilboa.
2 And the Philistines pursued closely {vadbeku: intense pursuit} after Saul and his sons, and they struck down {vayakku: lethal assault} Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua, the sons of Saul.
3 And the battle {milchamah: pitched assault} grew intense upon Saul, and the archers {morim: missile troops} found him, and he was wounded by the shooters.
4 And Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and pierce me with it, lest these uncircumcised {arelim: covenant-breakers} come and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, because he was very afraid. Then Saul took the sword and fell upon it {vayipol: self-inflicted death}.
5 When the bearer of his weapons {kelav: personal armaments} saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon the sword {kherev: execution weapon} and died.
6 So Saul {Shaul: Israel’s First King} died; his three sons and his whole household died together {yachdaw: same time}.
7 And all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that they had fled and that Saul and his sons had died; therefore they abandoned their cities {areihem: fortified towns} and fled. Then the Philistines {pelishtim: ancient coastal people} came and dwelt in them.
8 And it happened on the next day that the Philistines {pĕlištîm: coastal invaders} came to strip the slain {ḥălâlîm: those killed in battle}, and they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
9 And they stripped him and carried off his head and his armor, and sent {vayyishalchu: dispatched envoys} word throughout the land of the Philistines in every direction to proclaim the news to their idols {atzabeihem: carved images} and to the people.
10 And they placed his armor {keli: military regalia} in the house of their gods, and they fastened his skull {gulgal: dishonoring trophy} in the house of Dagon.
11 When all Jabesh Gilead {yavesh gilʿād: town community} heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul {shāʼûl: requested one},
12 And all the valiant men {chayil: men of strength} arose and carried the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons to Jabesh, where they buried their bones under the terebinth tree {elah: large shade tree} in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
13 So Saul died because of his unfaithfulness, by which he acted unfaithfully against the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge}, concerning the word of the LORD which he did not keep, and he inquired {sha’al: sought guidance from} of a medium.
14 And he did not seek {darash: active inquiry} the LORD {YHWH, Judicial Arbiter}, so He put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.
