1 And all Israel were registered by genealogy {hityakhshu: official lineage record}, and behold, they were written in the book of the kings of Israel. And Judah was exiled to Babylon for its unfaithfulness {maal: breach of faith}.
2 And the first dwellers {hayoshevim: initial inhabitants} to inhabit their holdings in their cities were the Israelites, the priests {kohanim: sanctuary ministers}, the Levites, and the temple servants.
3 And in Jerusalem dwelt some from the descendants of Judah {Yehudah: principal tribe}, and from the descendants of Benjamin {Binyamin: youngest tribe}, and from the descendants of Ephraim, and from Manasseh.
4 Utai, son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, from the sons{benei: tribal subgroup} of Perez{Peretz: tribal progenitor}, the son of Judah.
5 And from the Shilonite {ha-shiloni: resident of Shiloh}, Asaiah {Asayah: proper personal name} the firstborn and his sons.
6 And from the sons of Zerah {zeraḥ: clan ancestor} came Jeuel, and their brothers {acheihem: extended kinsmen} numbered 690.
7 And from the descendants {benei: patrilineal group} of Benjamin were Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Hodavyah, son of Hassenuah {hassenuah: early ancestor}.
8 And Ibneiah {yivneyah: Yahweh Builds} the son of Jeroham, and Elah the son of Uzzi {uzzi: my Strength}, the son of Mikri, and Meshullam the son of Shephatiah, the son of Reuel, the son of Yivniyah.
9 And their brothers, according to their genealogies {toldotam: ancestral lists}, were nine hundred fifty-six; all these men were heads of the house {beit: family estate} of their fathers.
10 And from the priests {hakohanim: temple mediators}, Jedaiah {Yedayah: known by Yahweh}, Jehoiarib, and Jakin.
11 And Azariah, son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, was the chief official {negid: ruling overseer} of the house of God {Elohim, Sanctuary Sovereign}.
12 And Adaiah, son{ben: male offspring} of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malkijah; and{vav: second line listed} Maasai, son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemith, son of Immer.
13 And their brothers, chiefs of the house of their fathers, numbered one thousand seven hundred and sixty mighty men of valor {cheil: strength} for the work of the service of the house of God {Elohim, Sanctuary Steward}.
14 And from the Levites{ha-leviyyim: consecrated tribe}, Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, from the sons of Merari{merari: Merarite clan}.
15 And Bakbakkar, Cheresh, Galal, and Mattaniah {Mattaniah: Levitical singer}, the son of Mikha, the son of Zikhri, the son of Asaph {Asaph: chief temple musician}.
16 And Obadiah son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun, and Berekiah son of Asa, son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages {chatzer: settled enclosures} of the Netophathites {Netofati: Netophah residents}.
17 And the gatekeepers {sho’arim: Levitical doorkeepers} — Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their brothers — Shallum was the chief {rosh: head, leader}.
18 And until now, at the King’s Gate {sha'ar: royal entrance} toward the east, they are the gatekeepers {sho'arim: Levitical guardians} for the camps of the sons of Levi.
19 And Shallum, son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his brothers of the house of their father—the Korahites—were over the work of the service as keepers of the thresholds for the tent. Their ancestors were over the camp of the LORD {YHWH, Sanctuary Guardian} as keepers of the entrance {hamavo: Main Entry Point}.
20 And Phinehas son of Eleazar was leader {nagid: appointed authority} over them formerly, and the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Supporter} was with him.
21 Zechariah, son of Meshelemiah, was the gatekeeper at the entrance {petach: access point} of the tent of meeting {mo’ed: appointed gathering place}.
22 All of these who were chosen as gatekeepers at the thresholds{bassippim: doorway sills} were 212. These were recorded{hityakhsam: entered by lineage} by genealogy in their villages; David and Samuel the seer established them in their trusted office.
23 They and their sons were responsible for the gates of the house of the LORD {YHWH, Householder King}, namely, the house of the tent, by watches {mishmarot: assigned shifts}.
24 Toward the four directions {rukhoth: compass quarters} the gatekeepers {sho'arim: temple sentries} were: east, west, north, and south.
25 And their brothers in their villages {chatzer: rural compounds} were to come {lavo: report for duty} for seven days, from time to time, with these.
26 For in faithfulness {emunah: trusted reliability}, they—the four mighty men of the gatekeepers, they being Levites—were over the chambers and over the treasuries of the house of God {ha-elohim, Sanctuary Protector}.
27 And they would lodge all around the house of God {Elohim, Temple Lord}, for the guard duty was upon them, and they were over the key {mafteach: entry control}, morning after morning.
28 And some of them were in charge over the utensils of the service{avodah: temple duties}, for they brought them in by count{mispar: exact tally} and brought them out by count.
29 And from among them some were appointed over the utensils and all the holy vessels, and over the fine flour {solet: sifted grain}, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense {levonah: fragrant resin}, and the spices.
30 And from the sons of the priests were the compounders of the mixture {mirkachat: priestly compound} for the spices {besamim: fragrant resins}.
31 And Mattithiah, from the Levites, he was the firstborn {bekhor: eldest son} of Shallum the Korahite, in faithfulness over the work of the flatbreads {chavitim: griddle cakes}.
32 And from the sons of the Kohathite, some of their brothers were appointed over the bread of the arrangement {ma‘arechet: designated display} to prepare it each Sabbath {shabbat: weekly rest}.
33 And these are the singers, the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites, who remained in the chambers, exempt {peturim: free from duties}, for by day and by night the work was their responsibility {aleihem: their charge}.
34 These were the heads {rashei: lineage leaders} of the fathers for the Levites {Leviyim: hereditary ministers} according to their genealogies; chiefs—these dwelt in Jerusalem.
35 And in Gibeon lived Jeiel {yei'el: prominent ancestor}, the father of Gibeon; and the name of his wife {ishto: life partner} was Maakah.
36 And his son {ben: male descendant}, the firstborn {bekhor: inheritance privilege}, was Abdon; then Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, and Nadab.
37 Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah {zekharyah: family head}, and Mikloth {mikloth: clan leader}.
38 And Mikloth fathered Shimeam, and they also dwelt {yashvu: established residence} opposite {neged: facing} their brothers in Jerusalem, with their brothers.
39 And Ner begot {holid: Hiphil causative bringing forth} Kish; Kish begot Saul; and Saul begot Jonathan {yehonatan: YHWH has given}, Malki-Shua, Abinadab, and Esh-Baal.
40 The son of Jonathan was Merib-Baal {Mĕrîḇ-Bāʿal: Contender of Baal}, and Merib-Baal became the father {hô·lîḏ: Causative Begetting} of Micah.
41 The sons of Micah were Pithon, Melech {melekh: royal title}, and Tahrea {takhrea: brotherly bond}, and Ahaz.
42 And Ahaz {Ahaz: held firm} begot {holid: fathered} Ya'rah, and Ya'rah begot Alemet, Azmaveth, and Zimri, and Zimri begot Motsa.
43 And Moza begot{holid: fathered or caused to be born} Binea; and Rephaiah his son{beno: direct male descendant}, Eleasah his son, Azel his son.
44 Azel had six {shishah: number of offspring} sons, and these are their names: Azrikam, Bokheru, Yishmael, Shearyah, Ovadiah, and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel {Azel: family head}.
