1 You are sons of the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikhem, Covenant Father}; you shall not cut yourselves, and you shall not make a baldness {korchah: mourning baldness} between your eyes for the dead.
2 For you are a holy people to the LORD your God {YHWH Elohekha: Covenant Sovereign}, and the LORD has chosen you to be for Him a people, a treasured possession {segullah: unique treasure} from all the peoples on the face of the earth.
3 You shall not eat any {kol: inclusive quantifier} abomination {toevah: ritually abhorrent object}.
4 This is the animal {behemah: permitted livestock} that you shall eat: the ox, the sheep {seh: small domesticated animal}, and the goat.
5 The stag {ayal: noble deer species}, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex {dishon: mountain-dwelling goat}, the antelope, and the mountain sheep.
6 And every animal that divides the hoof and splits it into two hoofs, and that brings up the cud {gerah: partially digested food} among the animals, you shall eat {tochelu: legally permitted}.
7 However, of those that bring up the cud or of those that have a split hoof—you shall not eat these: the camel, the rabbit, and the hyrax {shafan: rock-dwelling creature}—for although they bring up the cud, they do not split the hoof; they are unclean {temeim: ritually impure} for you.
8 And the pig, because it splits the hoof but does not chew the cud, is unclean {tame: ritually impure} for you; from their flesh you shall not eat, and you shall not touch their carcass {nivlatam: dead body}.
9 This you may eat of all that are in the waters: all that have a fin {snapir: aquatic appendage} and a scale {kasqeshet: protective covering} you may eat.
10 Anything that does not have a fin and a scale you shall not eat {tokhelu: divinely commanded}; it is unclean {tamei: ritually impure} for you.
11 You may eat any clean {tehorah: ritually pure} bird {tsippor: winged creature}.
12 And this{zeh: specified list} is what you are not to eat from among them: the eagle, the vulture, and the black vulture{azniyah: large carrion bird}.
13 And the kite {ra’ah: medium-sized raptor} and the buzzard and the falcon according to its kind {minah: classification by species}.
14 And every {kol: whole scope} raven {orev: black scavenger bird} according to its kind.
15 Also the ostrich {bat haya’anah: large desert bird} and the tachmas {tachmas: uncertain bird species}, the gull, and the hawk, each according to its kind.
16 The little owl {kos: small nocturnal bird}, the great owl, and the white owl {tinshamet: pale-plumed owl} are all unclean.
17 And the pelican {qa’at: large water bird}, and the carrion vulture {rachamah: carrion-eating bird}, and the cormorant.
18 And the stork {chasidah: migratory bird}, and the heron {anafah: long-legged wader} according to its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.
19 And every creeping thing {sheretz: swarming creature} that flies is unclean {tame: ritually unacceptable} for you; they shall not be eaten.
20 Every clean {tahor: ritually acceptable} bird you shall eat {tokhelu: permitted to consume}.
21 You must not eat any carcass {nevelah: animal found dead}; you may give it to the sojourner in your gates, and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. For you are a people set apart to the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Protector}. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.
22 You shall surely tithe all the produce {tevuat: harvest yield} of your seed {zarekha: what you sow} that comes forth from the field, year by year.
23 And you shall eat before the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Name Dweller} in the place that He will choose to cause His name to dwell there, the tithe {ma’aser: dedicated tenth} of your grain, your new wine and your oil and the firstborn of your herd and your flock, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God all the days.
24 But if the way is too much for you because you cannot carry it, because the place the LORD your God {YHWH Elohe-khā, Covenant Giver} chooses to put his name is distant from you, since the LORD your God blesses you {yevarekha: grants prosperity}.
25 And you shall give it for silver, and you shall bind up the silver in your hand, and you shall go to the place that the LORD your God {YHWH Elohekha, Personal Covenant God} will choose {yivchar: select by sovereign decision}.
26 And you shall give the silver for whatever your soul desires {teaveh: personal longing}—in cattle, in sheep, in wine, and in strong drink, and for whatever your soul asks {tisholkha: active request}. And you shall eat there before the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Provider}, and you shall rejoice—you and your household {uveitekha: family unit}.
27 And the Levite {Levi: set-apart minister} who is in your gates, you must not neglect him, because he has no portion {chelek: tribal allotment} or inheritance with you.
28 At the end of three years, you shall bring out all the tithe {ma’asar: dedicated tenth portion} of your produce in that year and deposit it in your gates {sha’ar: community gathering-place}.
29 And the Levite, because he has no portion or inheritance among you, and the sojourner {ger: protected resident}, and the orphan, and the widow who are within your gates, shall come and eat and be satisfied, so that the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Sustainer} your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.
