1 And it happened, when all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan westward and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea heard that the LORD {YHWH, River-Drying Deliverer} had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the sons of Israel until they crossed over, their heart melted, and no spirit {ruach: will to fight} remained in them because of the sons of Israel.
2 At that time the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Commander} said to Joshua, “Make for yourself knives {ḥarḇōṯ: sharp blades} of flint and circumcise the sons of Israel a second time.”
3 Then Joshua made flint knives {charvot tzurim: sharp stone tools}, and he circumcised the sons of Israel at the Hill of Foreskins {giv'at ha'aralot: site of covenant sign}.
4 And this is the reason {davar: cause} Joshua circumcised them: all the people who came out from Egypt—the males, all men of war {hamilchamah: battle campaign}—died in the wilderness on the way after they came out from Egypt.
5 For all the people who came out {hayotzim: those departing} were circumcised {mulim: ritually marked}, but all the people born {hayillodim: wilderness-born} in the wilderness on the way as they came out from Egypt had not been circumcised.
6 For forty years the sons of Israel walked in the wilderness until all the men of war who went out from Egypt and did not obey the voice of the LORD {YHWH, Promise Upholder} were consumed, because the LORD had sworn that He would not let them see the land that the LORD had sworn to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk {chalav: abundance} and honey.
7 And their sons—he raised them up in their place—Joshua {Yehoshua: Covenant Leader} circumcised them, for they were uncircumcised {arelim: lacking covenant sign}, because they had not circumcised them on the way.
8 And it happened that when all the nation had completed being circumcised, they remained in their places in the camp {machaneh: military encampment} until they were restored {chayotam: renewed to health}.
9 And the LORD {YHWH, Divine Deliverer} said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach {kherpat: Disgrace} of Egypt from off you.” And he called the name of that place Gilgal until this very day.
10 The Israelites {bnei Yisrael: covenant descendants} camped at Gilgal, and they performed the Passover {hapesach: commemorative sacrifice} on the fourteenth day of the month, in the evening, on the plains of Jericho.
11 They ate from the produce of the land on the day after the Passover, eating unleavened bread {matzot: flat cakes without yeast} and roasted grain {kalui: grain dried over fire} on that very day.
12 And the manna {ha-man: miraculous bread} ceased on the next day when they ate from the produce {me’avur: harvest yield} of the land, and there was no more manna for the sons of Israel. But they ate from the produce of the land of Canaan in that year.
13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was near Jericho {yericho: fortified city}, that he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, a man was standing opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us or for our adversaries {tsar: one who opposes}?”
14 He replied, “No, but as commander of the army of the LORD {YHWH, Divine Warrior}, I have now come.” Then Joshua fell {vayipol: sudden prostration} to the ground and bowed down, and he said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?”
15 And the commander of the army of the LORD {YHWH, Divine Leader} said to Joshua, “Take off your sandal {na'al: protective footwear} from upon your foot, for the place on which you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
