1 But on the first day of the week, at deep dawn {orthrou: earliest daylight watch}, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices {aromata: fragrant burial offerings} that they had prepared.
2 And they found the stone {lithos: heavy barrier} rolled away from the tomb {mnemeion: burial place}.
3 But when they had entered {eiselthousai: completed entry}, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus {Kyriou Iesou, Risen Lord}.
4 And it happened that, while they were perplexed {aporeisthai: utterly confused} about this, behold, two men stood by them in shining {astraptousē: dazzling bright} garments.
5 But as they became frightened {emphobon: overcome with fear} and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living {zonta: living one} among the dead?”
6 He {Iesous, Risen Lord} is not here, but He has been raised. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee {Galilaia: northern Israel region}.
7 Saying that the Son of Man {huios tou anthropou, Prophesied Sufferer} must {dei: divinely required plan} be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and on the third day rise.
8 And they remembered His {Iesous, Risen Teacher} words {rhematon: spoken sayings},
9 And having returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven {hendeka: core apostolic group} and to all the rest {loipoi: wider circle}.
10 Now there were Mary Magdalene {Magdalene: from Magdala} and Joanna and Mary the mother of James, and the other women {loipai: remaining group} with them; they were telling these things to the apostles.
11 And these words appeared before them as if they were nonsense {leros: foolish talk}, and they were not believing them {epistoun: ongoing disbelief}.
12 But Peter {Petros: Leading Witness} rose and ran to the tomb {mnemeion: burial place}, and stooping down he saw the linen cloths by themselves, and he went back to his own place, marveling at the event.
13 And behold, two of them were on that very day traveling to a village which was sixty stadia {stadious: ancient length unit} away from Jerusalem, which was named Emmaus {Emmaous: village near Jerusalem}.
14 And they were talking with each other {allelous: one another mutually} about all these things that had happened {sumbebekoton: events that have come to pass}.
15 And it came to pass, while they were talking and discussing together, Jesus Himself {Iesous, Risen Teacher} drew near and was walking with them {homilein: intimate conversation}.
16 But their eyes were kept {ekratounto: externally restrained} so that they would not recognize Him {Iesous, Concealed Risen Lord}.
17 And He {Iesous, Gentle Inquirer} said to them, “What are these words {logoi: serious conversation} that you are exchanging with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad.
18 But one, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him {Iesous, Unrecognized Messiah}, “Are You the only one dwelling as a stranger in Jerusalem {Ierousalem: city of peace}, and have You not known the things that have happened in her in these days?”
19 And He said to them, “What things?” But they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus {Iesous, Mighty Prophet} of Nazareth, who was a man, a prophet mighty in deed and word before God {Theos, Sovereign Judge} and all the people.”
20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him {Iesous, Righteous Sufferer} over to a judgment {krima: formal legal decision} of death, and they crucified Him.
21 But we were hoping that He {Iesous, Expected Redeemer} was the One who was about to redeem {lytrousthai: liberate by ransom} Israel, but indeed, besides all these things, today is the third day since these things happened.
22 But also certain women from among us astonished {exestesan: deeply shocked} us, having come early in the morning to the tomb {mnemeion: burial place}.
23 And when they did not find His {Iesous, Risen Lord} body, they came saying that they had seen a vision {optasian: supernatural sight} of angels who say that He is alive.
24 And some of those who were with us went to the tomb {mnemeion: burial site} and found it just as the women had said, but Him {Iesous, Risen Yet Unseen} they did not see.
25 And He {Iesous, Patient Revealer} said to them, “O foolish ones and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets {prophetai: Spirit-led witnesses} have spoken.”
26 Was it not necessary for the Christ {christos: Promised Messiah} to suffer these things and to enter into His glory {doxa: divine honor}?
27 And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, He {Iesous, Risen Teacher} explained to them in all the Scriptures {graphais: sacred writings} the things concerning Himself.
28 And they drew near to the village to which they were going, and He {Iesous, Risen Companion} made as if He were going farther {porroteron: a greater distance}.
29 And they urged Him {Iesous, Risen Traveler} strongly, saying, “Stay {meinon: remain as welcomed guest} with us, for it is toward evening and the day has already declined.” So He went in to stay with them.
30 And it happened that while He {Iesous, Risen Guest} was reclining {kataklithenai: customary meal posture} with them, having taken the bread, He blessed it and, after breaking it, was giving it to them.
31 But their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him {Iesous, Risen Lord}; and He became invisible {aphantos: vanished from view} from them.
32 And they said to each other, “Was not our heart burning within us as He {Iesous, Risen Teacher} was speaking to us on the way, as He was opening to us the scriptures {graphas: sacred writings}?”
33 And having arisen at that very hour {hora: specific moment}, they returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven {hendeka: core apostolic group} gathered together, and those who were with them.
34 Saying that the Lord {Kyrios, Resurrected Master} has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon {Simoni: eyewitness disciple}.
35 And they were relating the things that had happened on the road, and how He {christos, Risen Revealer} was made known to them in the breaking {klasis: symbolic meal} of the bread.
36 While they were speaking about these things, He {Iesous, Risen Lord} Himself stood in the midst of them and said to them, “Peace {eirene: wholeness} to you.”
37 But they, having been startled {ptoethentes: suddenly alarmed} and becoming afraid, supposed that they were seeing a spirit {pneuma: invisible being}.
38 And He {Iesous, Risen Teacher} said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do thoughts {dialogismoi: inward reasonings} arise in your hearts?”
39 See My hands and My feet: it is I Myself; touch {pselaphesate: test by touch} Me and see, because a spirit {pneuma: non-corporeal presence} does not have flesh and bones, as you see Me having.
40 And after saying this, He {Iesous, Risen Messiah} showed them His hands {cheiras: marks of crucifixion} and His feet.
41 And while they were still not believing because of their joy and were marveling, He {Christos, Risen Lord} said to them, “Do you have anything edible {brosimon: food suitable to eat} here?”
42 But they gave Him {Iesous, Risen Guest} a piece of broiled fish {ichthuos: simple meal}.
43 And having taken it, He {Iesous, Risen Lord} ate before them {enopion: in their presence}.
44 And He {Iesous, Risen Teacher} said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms {psalmois: sacred worship songs} about Me must be fulfilled.”
45 Then He {Iesous, Gracious Revealer} fully opened their minds {nous: deep perception} to understand the Scriptures.
46 And He {Iesous, Resurrected Redeemer} said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ {Christos, Anointed One} is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day.”
47 And repentance and forgiveness of sins are to be proclaimed in His {Iesous, Risen Messiah} name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem {Ierousalēm: starting point of witness}.
48 You are {este: continually appointed} witnesses {martyres: official testifiers} of these things.
49 And behold, I {Iesous, Faithful Promise Giver} am sending the promise of My Father {pater, Covenant Promise Source} upon you; but you, sit in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.
50 And He {Iesous, Resurrected Leader} led them out as far as toward Bethany, and having lifted up His hands, He blessed {eulogesen: spoken blessing} them.
