To the Chief Musician, upon the Gittith {gittit: probably tune name}, A Psalm of David {david: kingly psalmist}.
O LORD our Lord {YHWH Adoneinu, Supreme Majesty}, Your name {shimkha: revealed character} fills the whole earth with majesty; You have lifted Your glory above the heavens.
From the mouths of infants and nursing babies You {YHWH, Fortress Founder} have appointed strength, because of Your adversaries, so that the enemy {oyev: hostile attacker} and the avenger are silenced.
When I gaze upon Your heavens, the handiwork of Your fingers {etzbeot: delicate craftsmanship}, the moon and the stars that You {YHWH, Sovereign Maker} have established,
What is man {enosh: frail human creature} that You {YHWH, Mindful Sustainer} keep him in mind, and the son of man that You attend to him?
Yet You {Elohim, Wise Exalter} have made him a little lower than God, and You crown him with glory {kavod: radiant splendor} and honor.
You {YHWH, Sovereign Ruler} have appointed him to rule {tamshilehu: delegated authority} over the works of Your hands; You have put everything under his feet.
Flocks {tsonah: sheep and goats} and oxen, all of them, and also the beasts of the field {sadeh: open countryside}.
The bird of the heavens {shamayim: open sky} and the fish of the sea, and whatever passes through the paths of the seas {yam: great body of water}.
LORD {YHWH, Universal Majesty} our Lord {adoneinu: Covenant Master}, how majestic is Your name throughout all the earth.
