1 Boaz went up to the gate and sat there. Just then the redeemer {goel: kinsman redeemer} Boaz had spoken about was passing by. Boaz said, “Come over and sit here, friend {ploni: unnamed individual}.” So he turned aside and sat down.
2 Then he gathered ten men from the elders {ziqnei: respected leaders} of the city and said, “Sit here {po: gathering place}.” And they sat down.
3 He said to the redeemer{go'el: family redeemer}, “Naomi, who has returned from Moab{mo'av: bordering country}, is offering for sale the piece of field that belonged to our brother Elimelech.”
4 And I said, “I will make it known to your ear to say, ‘Buy {qeneh: legal purchase} it before those sitting and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem {ga'al: kinsman-redeemer duty}, redeem it. But if you will not redeem it, tell me so that I may know, for there is no one except you to redeem it, and I am next after you.’” And he said, “I will redeem it.”
5 And Boaz announced, “On the day you secure the field from Naomi’s hand, you shall likewise obtain Ruth the Moabite, the wife of the deceased, so as to establish the deceased’s name {shem: enduring legacy} within his inheritance {nachalah: landholding portion}.”
6 And the kinsman-redeemer {goel: family protector} said, “I am unable to redeem it for myself, lest I impair my inheritance {nachalah: hereditary possession}. Take the redemption right for yourself, for I am not able to redeem.”
7 And this was formerly the practice in Israel concerning the redemption {geullah: legal recovery} and concerning the exchange, to establish every matter: a man would remove his sandal {naʿal: symbolic transfer} and give it to his neighbor; and this was the attestation in Israel.
8 So the redeemer {hago'el: legal kinsman} said to Boaz, “Acquire it for yourself,” and he removed his sandal {na'al: property transfer symbol}.
9 And Boaz said to the elders {zekenim: community leaders} and to all the people, “You are witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of No'omi {No'omi: family matriarch} all that belonged to Elimelech, all that belonged to Kilion, and all that belonged to Machlon.”
10 Furthermore, I have acquired {kaniti: formal purchase} Ruth the Moabite, Mahlon’s wife, to be my wife, for the purpose of raising the dead man’s name over his inheritance and to ensure that his name will not be cut off from among his brothers or at the gate of his town. You are witnesses {edim: legal witnesses} today.
11 And all the people who were at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the LORD {YHWH, Blessing Giver} grant the woman {ishah: covenant partner} who is coming into your house to be like Rachel and Leah, who together built the house of Israel. May you achieve valor in Ephrathah and have a name that is known in Bethlehem.”
12 And may your house resemble that of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the offspring that the LORD {YHWH, Providential Giver} will grant you by this young woman {na’arah: young woman}.
13 Boaz took Ruth as his wife, and she became his spouse; when he lay with her, the LORD {YHWH, Giver of Life} granted her conception {herayon: ability to bear}, and she bore a son.
14 And the women said to Naomi, “Blessed is the LORD {YHWH, Provident Restorer} who has not left you without a redeemer this day; and may his name be called {yikkarei: proclaimed aloud} in Israel.”
15 He will become a restorer of your soul {nefesh: life essence} and a sustainer of your old age {seivatekh: advanced years}, for your daughter-in-law who loves you has borne him and she is more valuable to you than seven sons.
16 Then Naomi {Na'omi: Pleasant One} took the child and set him in her lap, and she became his nurse {omenet: loving caregiver}.
17 The neighbors {shekhenot: local women} gave him a name, saying, “A son {ben: male child} has been born to Naomi”; and they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
18 And these are the generations {toledot: family lineage} of Perez: Perez begot {holid: brought forth} Hezron.
19 And Hezron {hetsron: clan founder} begot {holid: caused to be born} Ram, and Ram begot Amminadab.
20 And Amminadab {Amminadav: my people are noble} fathered Nahshon, and Nahshon fathered Salmon {Salmah: reward}.
21 And Salmon {veSalmon: ancestral progenitor} begot Boaz, and Boaz begot Oved {Oved: lineage bearer},
22 And Obed {oved: Ruth’s son} fathered Jesse {yishai: David’s father}, and Jesse fathered David.
