2 Dan, Joseph, Benjamin {binyamin: right-hand son}, Naphtali, Gad {gad: troop}, and Asher.
3 The sons of Judah were Er, Onan, and Shelah; these three were born to him by the daughter of Shua, the Canaanite. Now Er, Judah’s firstborn {bekhor: primary heir}, was evil in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Moral Arbiter}, and He put him to death.
4 And Tamar {Tamar: Genealogical Anchor}, his daughter-in-law {kallato: Bride of a Son}, bore to him Perez and Zerah; and the number of Judah’s sons was five.
5 The sons {bnei: genealogical heading} of Perez {Peretz: the one who breaks through} are Hezron and Hamul.
6 And the sons of Zerah {zerach: dawn} were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Kalkol, and Dara—five {chamishah: number of sons} in number.
7 And the sons of Karmi: Achar, the one who troubled {oker: brought disaster} Israel, who acted unfaithfully in the devoted thing {bacherem: that which was banned for destruction}.
8 And the sons {bene: genealogical groups} of Ethan: Azaryah {Azaryah: YHWH has helped}.
9 And the sons of Hezron who were born to him were Jerahmeel {Yerakhmeel: God will have mercy} and Ram {Ram: exalted one}, and Kelubai.
10 And Ram fathered Amminadab, and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, leader {nesi: tribal chief} of the sons of Judah {yehudah: tribal ancestor}.
11 And Nahshon fathered Salma {salma: clan forefather}, and Salma fathered Boaz {boaz: Davidic forebear}.
12 And Boaz {boaz: strong lineage founder} fathered Obed, and Obed fathered Jesse {yishai: ancestral figure}.
13 And Jesse {Yishai: David’s father} begot his firstborn {b’khor-o: family birthright}, Eliab; and Abinadab the second, and Shimea the third.
14 Nethanel {nethanel: God Has Given}, the fourth; Raddai {raddai: personal name}, the fifth.
15 Ozem, the sixth {shishi: birth order}, and David {david: ancestral progenitor}, the seventh.
16 And their sisters were Zeruiah {tseruyah: David’s sister} and Abigail, and the sons of Zeruiah were Abishai, Joab, and Asahel—three in all {sheloshah: counted male offspring}.
17 And Abigail {Avigayil: Woman of Wisdom} bore Amasa, and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmaelite {Yishme'eli: Descendant of Ishmael}.
18 Caleb {kaleb: loyal dog}, son of Hezron, fathered children by Azubah {azuvah: forsaken one}, his wife, and by Jerioth; and these were her sons: Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon.
19 When Azubah died, Caleb took {vayyikach-lo: took for himself} Ephrath as his wife, and she bore {vateled-lo: bore for him} Hur to him.
20 And Hur fathered {holid: genealogical link} Uri, and Uri fathered Bezalel {Betsalel: shadow of God}.
21 And afterward, Hezron married the daughter of Machir {makhir: tribal ancestor}, the father of Gilead, when he was sixty years old {ben-shishim: significant age}, and she bore him Segub.
22 And Segub begot {holid: causative term for fathering} Jair, and he had twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead {gilad: region east of the Jordan River}.
23 And Geshur and Aram took the settlements {chavot: encampments} of Jair from them, along with Kenath and its villages, sixty towns in total. All these were the sons of Machir {Mākhīr: clan founder}, the father of Gilead.
24 And after the death of Hezron at Caleb Ephrathah {ephratah: Judah settlement}, Caleb had relations with his father’s wife, Aviyah, and she bore to him Ashhur, the father of Tekoa {tekoa: town of Judah}.
25 And the sons {bnei: male offspring} of Jerahmeel, the firstborn {bchor: eldest heir} of Hezron, were Ram his firstborn, Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah.
26 Jerahmeel also had another wife {ishah: additional spouse}, and her name was Atarah; she was Onam’s mother {onam: son listed}.
27 And the sons {benei-ram: genealogical designation} of Ram, the firstborn {bekhor: primary heir} of Jerahmeel, were Maaz, Jamin, and Eker.
28 The sons {bnei: generational link} of Onam were Shammai and Jada; and the sons of Shammai were Nadab {Nadav: generous giver} and Abishur.
29 And the name {shem: personal designation} of Avishur’s wife was Avihayil, and she bore {vateled: gave birth} to him Achban and Molid.
30 And the sons of Nadab were Seled and Appaim. And Seled died {vayamat: genealogical marker} without sons {banim: male offspring}.
31 The sons{uvenei: lineage marker} of Appayim were Ishi, and the sons of Ishi were Sheshan, and the sons of Sheshan were Ahlai{Ahlai: genealogical link}.
32 And the sons {uve-nei: lineage marker} of Yadaʿ, the brother of Shammay, were Yeter and Jonathan; and Yeter died without children {banim: male offspring}.
33 The sons of Jonathan were Pelet {Pelet: Judahite Lineage} and Zaza {Zaza: Tribal Branch}. These were the sons of Jerahmeel.
34 And Sheshan had no sons, but only daughters {banot: feminine children}. And Sheshan had an Egyptian servant {eved: household worker}, whose name was Jarha.
35 And Sheshan gave his daughter {bito: female offspring} to Jarha his servant as a wife {leishah: marital role}, and she bore Attai to him.
36 And Attai {attay: Judahite ancestor} fathered {holid: genealogical beget} Nathan, and Nathan fathered Zabad.
37 And {ve: sequential link} Zabad begot {holid: causative paternity} Ephlal, and Ephlal begot Obed.
38 And Obed fathered Jehu {holid: caused to bring forth descendants}, and Jehu fathered Azariah {azar-yah: God helps}.
39 And Azariah {Azaryah: Yah Has Helped} fathered {holid: caused the birth} Helez, and Helez fathered Eleasah.
40 And Eleasah fathered {holid: genealogical term} Sismai {sismai: patrilineal link}, and Sismai fathered Shallum.
41 And Shallum {shal-lum: recompense} begot {holid: caused to be born} Jekamiah, and Jekamiah begot Elishama.

44 And Shema fathered {holid: Genealogical Act} Raham, the father {avi: Ancestral Head} of Jorkeam, and Rekem fathered Shammai.
45 The son {ben: direct male descendant} of Shammai was Maon, and Maon was the father {avi: clan progenitor} of Beth Zur.
46 And Eiphah, Caleb’s concubine {pilegesh: recognized secondary wife}, bore {yaldah: gave birth} Haran, Motza, and Gazez; and Haran fathered Gazez.
47 And the sons {bene: male descendants} of Yahdai {yahdai: clan progenitor} were Regem, Yotam, Geshan, Pelet, Eyphah, and Shaaph.
48 The concubine {pilegesh: secondary wife} of Caleb, Maakah {maakah: royal consort}, bore Sheber and Tirhanah.
49 And she bore Shaaph, the father {avi: ancestor} of Madmannah, and Sheva, the father of Makbenah and Gibea; and Caleb’s daughter was Akhsah {akhsah: anklet}.
50 These were the sons of Caleb {Kalev: family leader} son of Hur, the firstborn of Ephrathah: Shoval, the father of Kiriath Jearim {Qiryat Yeʿarim: city of forests}.
