1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our own eyes, which we watched closely, and which our hands have touched—this we proclaim: the Word {Logos, Incarnate Life Revealer} of life {zoe: spiritual, eternal life}.
2 This life was made visible, and we have seen it; we bear witness and announce to you the eternal life, which was with the Father {Pater, Eternal Source} and has been made visible to us {hemin: direct witnesses}.
3 What we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship is with the Father {Pater, Source of Fellowship} and with His Son, Jesus Christ {Iesous Christos, Anointed Savior}.
4 We are writing these things so that our joy {chara: shared rejoicing} may be brought to fullness {pepleroo: fully realized}.
5 This is the message {angelia: authoritative proclamation} we have heard from Him and we report to you: God {Theos, Holy Light Source} is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
6 If we say we have fellowship with Him {autou, God of Light} but we are walking in the darkness {skotei: moral spiritual darkness}, we speak falsely and we are not doing the truth.
7 But if we walk in the light as He {Theos, Perfectly Holy Light} is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus {Iesous, Sin-Cleansing Savior} His Son cleanses us from all sin.
8 If we say we have no sin, we mislead ourselves {heautous: our own selves}, and the truth {aletheia: genuine spiritual reality} is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, He {Theos, Righteous Forgiver} is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness {adikias: every moral wrong}.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we portray Him {Theos, Faithful Witness} as a liar, and His word {logos: divine instruction} is not in us.
