1 In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant {eved: official vassal} for three years. Then he rebelled {marad: defiantly revolted} against him.
2 And the LORD {YHWH, Divine Judge} sent against him bands of Chaldeans, Arameans, Moabites, and the sons of Ammon, and He dispatched them into Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke by His servants the prophets {nevi’im: inspired messengers}.
3 Surely, by the command{al-pi: authoritative order} of the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge}, it happened in Judah to remove them from before His face because of the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he did.
4 And also the blood of the innocent {dam hanaki: guiltless life} which he shed, and he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; and the LORD {YHWH, Relentless Judge} was not willing to forgive.
5 And the rest of the deeds {dib-rei: idiomatic acts} of Jehoiakim, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles {dibrei hayamim: royal annals} of the kings of Judah?
6 Jehoiakim lay down {yishkav: euphemism for death} with his fathers, and Jehoiachin his son became king in his place {takhtav: established as successor}.
7 And the king of Egypt did not go out again from his land, because the king of Babylon took from the river {nakhal: frontier stream} of Egypt up to the river Euphrates, all that had belonged to the king of Egypt {melech mitzrayim: Egyptian monarch}.
8 Jehoiachin was eighteen years old {ben-shemonah esreh shanah: counting by units and tens} when he began to reign, and he reigned three months {chadashim: lunar calendar period} in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Nehushta, the daughter of Elnathan, from Jerusalem.
9 And he did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Moral Judge}, according to all that his father had done {aviv: direct ancestor}.
10 At that time, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar {Nevukhadnetzar: Babylonian king} the king of Babylon went up to Jerusalem, and the city came under siege {matzor: military blockade}.
11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city, and his servants {avadim: palace attendants} were besieging {tsarim: surrounding and cutting off} it.
12 And Jehoiachin, king of Judah, went out to the king of Babylon with his mother, his servants {avadim: royal attendants}, his officials {sarim: royal counselors}, and his eunuchs. The king of Babylon then took him in the eighth year of his reign.
13 And he brought out from there all the treasures {otzrot: sacred reserve} of the house of the LORD {YHWH, Guardian of Holiness} and the treasures of the house of the king, and he cut up all the gold vessels that Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the LORD, just as the LORD had spoken.
14 And he exiled all Jerusalem, and all the officers, and all the mighty warriors of the army—ten thousand exiles—and all the craftsmen {hecharash: skilled artisan} and the smiths; none remained except the poorest {dallat: impoverished class} of the people of the land.
15 And he exiled Jehoiachin {Yehoiyakhin: Judah’s king} to Babylon, and the mother of the king, and the wives of the king, and his officials, and the nobles of the land—he led into exile {golah: forced removal} from Jerusalem to Babylon.
16 And all the men of valor—seven thousand—and the craftsmen and the smiths—a thousand—all of them mighty men, doers of war {osei milchamah: trained for battle}—the king of Babylon {meleḵ-bavel: imperial conqueror} brought them into exile to Babylon.
17 And the king of Babylon made Mattaniah, his father’s brother {dodo: father’s brother}, king in his place and changed his name {shem: personal identity} to Zedekiah.
18 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign {bemalko: accession phrase}, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah from Libnah {milivnah: Judahite town}.
19 And he did the evil in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge}, just as all that Jehoiakim {Yehoiakim: former monarch} had done.
20 For because of the anger of the LORD {YHWH, Holy Judge}, it happened in Jerusalem and in Judah until He cast them from His presence {panav: turned-away face}; and Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
