Woe to those who devise trouble and do {poal: carry through} evil on their beds! In the morning light {or: daybreak} they do it, because it is in the power of their hand.
They covet fields and take them by force {gazalu: violent seizure}; they take houses and carry them off. They oppress a man and his household {bayit: family unit}, a man and his inheritance.
Therefore, thus says the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Judge}: Behold, I am devising calamity against this family, from which you will not be able to pull your necks {tzavroteikhem: yoke image} away; and you will not walk in haughtiness, for it is a time of calamity.
In that day someone will sing a taunt-song{mashal: derisive saying} over you, and he will wail a lament—“It has happened!”—saying: “Devastated! We have been plundered. He exchanges the portion of my people; how He removes it from me! To a turncoat{leshovev: faithless deserter} he parcels out our fields.”
Therefore, for you there will be no one to cast a measuring line {khevel: survey rope} by lot within the assembly {qahal: gathered people} of the LORD {YHWH, Inheritance Judge}.
“Do not prophesy,” they say; “They shall not prophesy about these things {la-eleh: these accusations}; disgrace {kelimmot: public humiliation} will not overtake us.”
Is this what is being said, house of Jacob {beit-yaaqov: covenant people}? “Has the Spirit of the LORD {YHWH, Patient Covenant Lord} become short? Are these His deeds? Do not My words do good with the upright who walks.”
And recently my people have risen up as an enemy {leoyev: hostile role}; you strip off the robe {salmah: outer garment} and the mantle from those who pass by in security, like those returning from war.
You drive out the women of my people from the house of her delights{ta'anugeha: cherished pleasures}; and you take my glory from upon her children forever{le'olam: perpetual duration}.
Arise and go, for this is not the resting place {menuchah: place of rest}, because of uncleanness {tameah: ritual impurity} it will destroy and the destruction will be severe.
If a man, walking in wind {ruach: empty talk} and falsehood {sheqer: willful untruth}, lies, saying, “Let me prophesy to you about wine and strong drink,” then he would be the prophet for this people.
I {YHWH, Remnant Gatherer} will surely assemble all of you, Jacob; I will surely gather the remnant {sheerit: spared survivors} of Israel. Together I will set them like sheep in Bozrah, like a flock in the midst of its fold; they will make a din because of people.
The breaker has gone up before them; they have broken through, passed through the gate, and gone out by it. Their king has gone on before them, and the LORD {YHWH, Delivering Leader} is at their head {berosh: chief position}.
