1 Whoever loves discipline {musar: formative instruction} loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is senseless {ba'ar: like an unreasoning animal}.
2 A good person obtains favor {ratzon: pleased acceptance} from the LORD {YHWH, Just Arbiter}, but the LORD condemns a man of wicked schemes.
3 A man will not be established by wickedness {resha: immoral behavior}, but the root of the righteous {tzaddikim: just individuals} will not be moved.
4 A woman of strength {chayil: noble power} is a crown to her husband, but one who brings shame is like decay {rakav: destructive rot} in his bones.
5 The thoughts of the righteous {tsaddiqim: morally upright} are justice, but the counsels {tachbulot: strategic plans} of the wicked are deceit.
6 The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the mouth of the upright {yesharim: morally upright} will deliver {yatsilem: causative deliverance} them.
7 The wicked are overthrown{hafokh: overturning} and are no more, but the house of the righteous{tzaddikim: just/innocent} will stand firm.
8 A man will be praised according to his insight {sikhlo: discernment}, but one twisted of heart will be for contempt {lavuz: regarded despicably}.
9 Better is one who is despised and has a servant {eved: household attendant} than one who honors himself and lacks bread {lechem: daily provision}.
10 The righteous{tsaddiq: just} knows the soul of his animal, but the mercies of the wicked are cruel{akhzari: pitiless}.
11 The one who works his land {admato: personal property} will be satisfied {yisba: full contentment} with bread, but whoever pursues empty things is lacking heart.
12 The wicked person desires the spoil{metzod: captured spoil} of evildoers, but the root of the righteous yields{yitten: gives forth} fruit.
13 In the transgression {pesha: rebellious act} of lips there is a snare {mokesh: trap} for the wicked, but a righteous one will go out of distress.
14 From the fruit of a man's mouth {pi-ʾiš: speech of a person} one is satisfied with good, and the recompense {g'mul: payment or reward} of a person's hands is returned to him.
15 The way of a fool {fool: one who rejects instruction} is right in his own eyes, but whoever listens to counsel is wise {wise: skilled in discerning life}.
16 The anger of a fool will be made known on the same day, but a prudent person {arum: shrewd discretion} conceals shame {qalon: public disgrace}.
17 He who breathes out faithfulness {emunah: steadfast reliability} declares righteousness {tsedeq: moral rightness}, but a false witness brings deceit.
18 There is one who speaks rashly like stabbings {madkerot: stabbing wounds} of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing {marpe: restoration}.
19 The lip of truth will be established forever {la-ad: unending span}, but the tongue of falsehood {shaker: intentional deceit} is only for a moment.
20 Deceit {mirmah: moral deception} is in the heart of those who devise evil, but to the counselors {yoatzim: trusted advisors} of peace there is joy.
21 No evil {aven: moral harm} will befall the righteous, but the wicked will be filled with trouble {ra: calamity}.
22 Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge}, but those who act faithfully are His delight {retzono: what pleases Him}.
23 A prudent {arum: shrewd restraint} man conceals knowledge, but the heart of fools proclaims foolishness {ivvelet: senseless folly}.
24 The hand {yad: personal agency} of the diligent will rule, but slackness will become forced labor {mas: corvée service}.
25 Anxiety in the heart {lev: inner being} of a man causes it to sink, but a good word {davar: gracious message} makes it rejoice.
26 A righteous person {tsaddiq: morally upright} is a guide to his neighbor, but the way of the wicked {resha’im: acting unjustly} leads them astray.
27 The slothful{remiyyah: idle, lacking effort} man does not roast his game, but diligence{charutz: determined effort} is a man’s precious wealth.
28 In the path of righteousness {tsedaqah: covenant faithfulness} is life, and in its pathway there is no death {mavet: separation from life}.
