And Reaiah son of Shobal fathered {holid: established lineage} Jahath, and Jahath fathered Ahumai and Lahad. These are the families {mishpechot: family lineages} of the Zorathites.

And these were of the father of Etam{avi: ancestral head}: Jezreel, Ishma, and Idbash; and their sister’s name{shem: recorded identity} was Hazzelelponi.

Ashhur, the father {avi: founding ancestor} of Tekoa {teqoa: Judean town}, had two wives, Helah and Naarah.

Naarah bore him Ahuzzam {Achuzzam: clan founder}, Hepher, Temeni, and Haahashtari; these were the sons of Naarah {Na‘arah: mother’s name}.

And Jabez {ya‘betz: he causes pain} was more honorable {nîkhbād: distinguished status} than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”

And Jabez called to the God of Israel {Elohei Yisrael, Covenant Protector}, saying, “If you will surely bless me {barekh: bestow favor} and enlarge my border and let your hand be with me and keep me from harm so that I might not experience pain.” And God granted that which he requested.

And Kelub, the brother of Shuhah, fathered {holid: causative begetting} Mehir {mechir: price, value}; he was the father of Eshton.

And Eshton fathered Beth-rapha{beit: clan house}, Paseah, and Tehinnah, the father{avi: founding patriarch} of Ir-nahash; these were the men of Recah.

And the sons of Kenaz were Othniel {otniel: My Strength} and Seraiah {serayah: Yahweh Ruler}, and the sons of Othniel were Hathath.

And Meonothai begot Ophrah, and Seraiah begot Joab, the father {avi: clan founder} of the Valley of Craftsmen, because they were craftsmen {kharashim: skilled workers}.

The sons of the wife of Hodiah {hodiyah: thanksgiving woman}, the sister of Nacham, were the fathers of Keilah the Garmite and Eshtemoa the Maakathite {maakathite: border region}.

The sons {benei: patrilineal descendants} of Simeon were Amnon, Rinnah, Ben-Chanan {ben-chanan: Chanan’s son}, Tulon, and Tilon; and the sons of Ishi were Zoheth and Ben-Zoheth {ben-zoheth: Zoheth’s son}.

The sons of Shelah {shelah: descendant of Judah}, son of Judah: Er, the father of Lekah, and Laadah, the father of Mareshah, and the families of the house of service of fine linen {avodat ha-buts: skilled linen craftsmanship} at the house of Ashbea.

And Jokim, and the men of Kozeba, and Joash, and Saraph—these are the ones who possessed Moab{moav: Transjordan region}—and Jashubi Lehem. And these are the ancient records{attikim: old chronicles}.

They were the potters {yotserim: skilled craftsmen} and inhabitants of Netaim and Gederah; with the king {melek: royal authority} in his service, they lived there.

The sons {bnei: tribal descendants} of Simeon {shimʿon: tribal patriarch} were Nemuel, Jamin, Jarib, Zerah, and Shaul.

Shallum was his son {beno: direct descent}, Mibsam his son, Mishma {mishma: descendant name} his son.

And the sons {venei: lineage heading} of Mishma: Hammuel his son {beno: filial link}, Zakkur his son, Shimei his son.

And Shimei had sixteen sons and six daughters, but his brothers did not have many sons, and all their clan {mishpachtam: family line} did not multiply {hirbu: become numerous} as much as the sons of Judah.

They dwelt {vayeshevu: took up residence} in Beersheba {be-er-sheva: well of seven}, and in Moladah, and in Hazar Shual.

And in Bilhah {Bilhah: hilltop stronghold}, and in Ezem, and in Tolad {Tolad: southern town in Simeon’s territory}.

And in Bethuel {bethuel: Simeonite town}, and in Hormah, and in Ziklag {ziklag: David’s base},

In Beit Markaboth {markaboth: chariot depot}, in Hatsar Susim, in Beit Biri, and in Shaaraim—these were their towns until the reign of David {David: Beloved King}.

And their villages {chatzrehem: enclosed settlements} were Etam, and Ain, Rimmon, Tochen, and Ashan—five towns {arim: clustered communities}.

And all their settlements {chatzer: enclosed courtyard} that are around these cities as far as Baal—this was their habitation {moshav: dwelling place}, and their genealogy was registered for them.

And Ziza, the son of Shiph‘i, the son of Allon {allon: oak-like}, the son of Yedaiah, the son of Shimri {shimri: watchful}, the son of Shemaiah.

These men who came by name {beshemot: recorded designations} were chiefs among their clans, and the houses of their fathers increased greatly {larov: to a great number}.

And they went to the entrance {mibo: approach point} of Gedor as far as the east of the valley {hagai: steep ravine} to seek pasture for their flocks.

And they found fat pasture and good grazing, and the land was broad of hands {yadayim: expansive reach} and tranquil and peaceful, for the dwellers there formerly were from Ham {kham: ancestral line}.

Then these recorded {haketuvim: written registry} by name came in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and struck their tents and the Meunites who were found there, and devoted them to destruction until this day; and they settled in their place because pasture {mir’eh: open grazing land} for their flocks was there.

And from them, from the sons of Simeon, five hundred men went to Mount Seir {seir: Edomite region}, with Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi, at their head {rosh: chief leader}.

And they struck down the remnant {sheerit: remaining ones} of Amalek {amalek: ancestral foe}, and they dwelt there until this day.
