1 And the sons {bnei: genealogical designation} of Issachar {Yissakhar: apportioned reward}—Tola, Puah, Yashub, and Shimron—numbered four.
2 The sons of Tola: Uzzi, Rephaiah, Jeriel, Jahmai, Ibsam, and Samuel—heads of their fathers’ houses for Tola—mighty men of valor {gibborai chayil: elite warriors} according to their generations. Their number in the days of David {bimei David: during David’s reign} was 22,600.
3 The sons of Uzzi {Uzzi: clan patriarch} were Yizraḥyah. And the sons of Yizraḥyah were Michael, Obadiah, Joel, and Yiššîyāh—four; together with Yizraḥyah they were five in all, and all of them were chiefs {rashim: clan leaders}.
4 And upon them, according to their generations and belonging to the house of their fathers, were bands of the army for war—thirty-six thousand {sheloshim veshishsha elef: thirty-six thousand}—for they had multiplied wives {nashim: women in plural} and children.
5 And their brothers, belonging to all the families of Issachar, were mighty men of valor {gibborai: distinguished warriors} and in all were registered genealogically {hityachshem: comprehensively recorded}, numbering eighty-seven thousand.
6 Benjamin {binyamin: tribe ancestor} had three {sheloshah: counted sons} sons: Bela, Beker, and Jediael.
7 The sons of Bela were Etzbon, Uzzi, Uzziel, Jerimoth, and Iri—five, heads of the houses of their fathers, mighty men {gibbor: elite fighters}. Their genealogy {yachas: enrollment lists} listed twenty-two thousand thirty-four.
8 The sons of Bekher {Bekher: personal name meaning “firstborn”} were Zemirah, Joash, Eliezer, Elioenai, Omri, Jeremoth, Abijah, Anathoth, and Alemeth; all these {kol-eleh: the entire group} were the sons of Bekher.
9 And their genealogy was recorded by generations, the heads of the house of their fathers and mighty men of valor {chayil: courageous warriors}, numbering 20,200 {esrim elef u-matayim: 20,200 men}.
10 And the sons of Yediael {yediael: God Knows} were Bilhan. And the sons of Bilhan were Jeush, Benjamin {binyamin: Son of the Right Hand}, Ehud, Kenaanah, Zethan, Tarshish, and Ahishahar.
11 All these were sons of Yediael{Yediael: God knows}, heads of ancestral houses, mighty men of valor—17,200 able to go out as an army for war{milchamah: battle engagement}.
12 The Shuppim and the Huppim were the sons of Ir {Ir: tribal ancestor}; Hushim was the son of Aher {Aher: alternative lineage}.
13 The sons{benei: clan descendants} of Naphtali were Jahziel, Guni, Jezer, and Shallum, the sons of Bilhah{bilhah: handmaid mother}.
14 The sons of Manasseh were Asriel, whom his Aramean concubine {pilegesh: secondary wife in ancient custom} bore, and she bore Machir, the father {avi: denotes ancestral founder} of Gilead.
15 And Machir {machir: Manasseh’s clan founder} took a wife for Huppim and for Shuppim, and his sister’s name was Maakah. The second was named Zelophehad, and Zelophehad had daughters {banot: female offspring}.
16 Then Maakah, the wife of Machir {machir: clan founder}, bore a son and named him Peresh. The name of his brother was Sheresh, and his sons were Ulam {ulam: stronghold builder} and Rakem.
17 The sons of Ulam were Bedan. These were the sons of Gilead{gilad: rocky region}, the son of Makhir{makhir: bartered one}, the son of Menasheh.
18 And his sister Hammoleketh {molekhet: queenly title} bore {yaldah: lineage verb} Ishhod, Abiezer, and Mahlah.
19 And the sons {bnei: male descendants} of Shemida {Shemida: tribal patriarch} were Ahyan, Shechem, Likhi, and Aniam.
20 The sons {benei: male descendants} of Ephraim were Shuthelah {shutalakh: founding ancestor}, and Bered his son, and Tahath his son, and Eleadah his son, and Tahath his son.
21 Zabad his son and Shuthelah his son, and Ezer and Elead were killed by the men of Gath {Gat: Philistine city} who were born in the land, because they went down to seize their livestock {mikneh: herd animals}.
22 And Ephraim, their father, mourned {vayitabel: intense mourning} many days, and his brothers {echav: close relatives} came to comfort him.
23 And he came to his wife, and she conceived {vatahar: began pregnancy} and bore a son, and he called his name Beriah {beriah: named for adversity}, because trouble had come upon his house.
24 And his daughter, Sheerah, built Lower and Upper Beth Horon {beit-choron: house of Horon}, as well as Uzzen Sheerah {uzzen: Ear of Sheerah}.
25 And Refach {Refach: ancestral link} was his son {ben: descent marker}, and Reshef was his son, and Telach was his son, and Tachan was his son.
26 Laadan {la‘dan: patriarchal ancestor} was his son; Ammihud was his son, and Elishama {elishama: God has heard} was his son.
27 Nun, his son {beno: lineage marker}; Joshua {yehoshua: YHWH Saves}, his son.
28 And their possession {va’achuzatam: inherited land allotments} and their settlements were: Bethel with its villages {uvenoteha: dependent rural communities}; on the eastern side, Naaran; on the western side, Gezer with its villages; and Shechem with its villages, extending to Ayyah with its villages.
29 And by the borders{yedei: territories allotted} of the sons of Manasseh were Beit She’an and its villages, Taanach and its villages, Megiddo and its villages, and Dor and its villages; the sons of Joseph son of Israel lived{yashvu: settled permanently} in these places.
30 The sons of Asher were Imnah {imnah: assigned portion}, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah; and Serah {serah: abundance} was their sister.
31 And the sons {uvenei: familial lineage} of Beriah were Cheber and Malchiel. Malchiel was the father of Birzaith {birzayit: ancient settlement}.
32 And Heber {hever: clan ancestor} fathered Japhlet, Shomer, and Hotham; and their sister {achotam: female sibling} was Shua.
33 And the sons {bnei: descendants} of Yaphlet were Pasak, Bimhal, and Ashvath; these {eleh: summative pronoun} were the sons of Yaphlet.
34 And the sons {bene: male descendants} of Shamer {shamer: clan ancestor} were Ahi, Rohgah, Jehubbah, and Aram.
35 And the sons {bnei: descendants} of Helem his brother {achiv: sibling relationship} were Zophah, Imna, Shelesh, and Amal.
36 The sons {benei: male descendants} of Tsofach {tsophach: radiating one} were Suach, Harnepher, Shual, Beri, and Yimrah.
37 Bezer {betser: fortress}, Hod, Shamma, Shilshah {shilshah: third-born}, Yitran, and Beera.
38 And the sons {uvenei: male descendants} of Jether {yeter: clan founder} were Jephunneh, Pispah, and Ara.
39 And the sons of Ulla {ulla: clan ancestor} were Arah, Hanniel {hanniel: personal name}, and Rizia.
40 All these were the sons of Asher—heads of the house of their fathers, selected warriors {berurim: Chosen By Distinction}, chiefs of the princes {nesi’im: Leading Clan Rulers}. Their genealogy was enrolled {ve-hityachsam: Formally Registered} for service in the army in battle, and their number was twenty-six thousand men.
