1 For I determined {krino: deliberate decision} this for myself, that I would not come to you again in sorrow {lype: emotional pain}.
2 For if I cause you sorrow {lypo: inner grief}, who then is making me glad {euphrainon: emotional joy} except the one who is being made sorrowful by me?
3 And I wrote this very thing in order that I might not have sorrow {lypen: painful distress} when I came from those over whom I ought to rejoice, having confidence in you all that my joy {chara: shared gladness} is the joy of you all.
4 For out of much affliction {thlipseos: crushing pressure} and distress of heart I wrote to you with many tears, not so that you might be grieved, but so that you might know the love {agapen: self-giving devotion} which I have more abundantly toward you.
5 But if anyone has caused grief, he has not caused it to me, but in part {apo merous: limited extent}—so that I might not burden all of you {hymas: you plural community}.
6 Sufficient for such a one is this punishment {epitimia: corrective discipline} that is from the majority {pleionon: most members}.
7 So that, on the contrary, you should rather forgive {charisasthai: graciously release} and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up by excessive sorrow {lype: anguished grief}.
8 Therefore I urge you to confirm {kyrosai: formally endorse} your love {agapen: covenantal care} toward him.
9 For to this end also I wrote, so that I might know the proof of you {dokimen: genuine character}, whether in all things you are obedient {hypekooi: responsive to instruction}.
10 To whomever you forgive anything, I also {kago: in full agreement} forgive; for indeed, what I have forgiven—if I have forgiven anything—I have forgiven it for your sake in the presence of Christ {Christos, Present Witness}.
11 So that we might not be taken advantage of by Satan {Satana, Hostile Opponent}, for we are not ignorant of his intentions {noemata: hostile designs}.
12 But when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ {Christos, God’s Anointed King}, and a door was opened for me in the Lord {Kyrios, Sovereign Guide}.
13 I did not have rest in my spirit {pneuma: inner being}, because I did not find Titus my brother; but having taken leave of them, I went out into Macedonia {Makedonia: northern region}.
14 But thanks be to God {Theos, Triumphant Leader}, who always leads us in triumph in Christ {Christos, Sphere of Victory}, and who through us makes known the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.
15 For we are a fragrance of Christ {Christos, Victorious Savior} to God {Theos, Pleased Father} among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing {apollymenois: undergoing ruin}.
16 To some we are a fragrance{osme: spiritual influence} from death{thanatos: spiritual ruin} to death, but to others a fragrance from life to life. And for these things, who is sufficient?
17 For we are not like the many who peddle the word of God {Theos, Holy Judge of Our Speech} but from sincerity {eilikrineias: genuine purity} and from God we speak before God in Christ.
