During the sixth year, in the sixth month, on the fifth day of the month, I sat in my house with the elders {ziknei: respected leaders} of Judah before me when the hand of the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH, Sovereign Revealer} came upon me there.
And I saw and behold a likeness {dmut: visionary form} like the appearance of fire from his loins downward, fire; and from his loins upward, like the appearance of brightness, like the look of chashmal {chashmal: gleaming amber}.
Then He sent forth the form of a hand and seized me by a lock of my head, and the Spirit lifted me up between earth and sky, carrying me in visions from God {Elohim, Divine Revealer} to Jerusalem at the entrance of the inner gate that faces north, where the seat of the image {semel: idol} of jealousy stood.
And behold, the glory of the God of Israel {Elohei Yisrael, Manifested Majesty} was present there, like the appearance {mar'eh: visionary image} that I had seen in the valley.
And He {YHWH, Sovereign Revealer} said to me, “Son of man, lift up now your eyes toward the north.” So I lifted up my eyes northward, and behold, this image {semel: cultic object} of jealousy stood north of the altar gate in the entryway.
And He {YHWH, Righteous Judge} said to me, “Son of Man, do you see what they are doing—the great abominations which the house of Israel is committing here so that I would be driven far from My sanctuary {mikdashi: holy place}? Yet you will turn back and see greater abominations.”
And he brought me to the entrance {petach: threshold opening} of the court {chatzar: open enclosure}, and I saw, and behold, there was a hole—one—in the wall.
And He {YHWH, Vision Giver} said to me, “Son of Man {ben-adam: representative one}, dig now into the wall.” So I dug through the wall, and behold a single opening.
And he said to me, "Go in and see the evil {raot: morally corrupt} abominations {toevot: detestable practices} which they are performing here."
Seventy men from the elders of the house of Israel stood before them, with Jaazaniah son of Shaphan in their midst {tocham: among them}. Each held his censer {mikteret: incense vessel} in his hand, and a heavy cloud of incense ascended.
And he said to me, "Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, each man in the chambers of his imagery? For they say, ‘The LORD {YHWH, Observer and Judge} does not see us; the LORD has forsaken the land {haaretz: Promised Land}.’"
And He said to me, "You will turn again and you will see even greater {gedolot: intensified magnitude} abominations {toevot: detestable practices} that they are committing."
And he brought me to the threshold of the north gate of the house of the LORD {YHWH, Sanctum Sovereign}, and there I observed women seated in lamentation for Tammuz {tammuz: Mesopotamian deity}.
Then He {YHWH, Vision Giver} said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Yet you will turn again and see greater abominations {to’evot: detestable acts} than these.”
Then He brought me into the inner court of the house of the LORD{YHWH, Sanctuary Sovereign}, and behold at the entrance of the temple, between the porch{ulam: vestibule} and the altar, there stood about twenty-five men; their backs were toward the LORD’s temple, and their faces were eastward as they bowed down to the sun.
And He {Adonai, Supreme Judge} said to me, “Have you seen, son of man? Is it a slight matter for the house of Judah to commit the abominations which they have done here? For they have filled the land with violence {chamas: pervasive cruelty}, and they have returned to provoke Me to anger. And behold, they are putting the branch to their nose.”
Therefore I {YHWH, Righteous Judge} will also act in fury; my eye will not spare, nor will I have compassion {ekhmol: to show mercy}. Even when they cry out with a loud voice in my ears, I will not listen.
