1 And the word of the LORD {YHWH, Divine Communicator} came to me, saying {le'emor: introducing direct speech}.
2 And you, son of man, thus says the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH, Sovereign Master}, to the land of Israel: An end! The end has come upon the four corners {kanfot: every extremity} of the land.
3 Now the end is upon you, and I {YHWH, Avenging Judge} will send my anger against you, and I will judge you according to your ways {derakhayikh: pattern of life}, and I will bring upon you all your abominations.
4 And my eye will not have pity upon you, nor will I spare {taḥos: show compassion}, for I will give your ways upon you, and your abominations will be in your midst; and you will know that I am the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge}.
5 Thus says the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH, Divine Judge}: “An evil {ra'ah: severe disaster}, a singular evil—behold, it has come!”
6 An end has come; the end has come; it has awakened against you {elayikh: directed toward you}. Behold {hineh: commanding attention}, it has come.
7 The doom {hatsefirah: decisive end} has come upon you, O inhabitant of the land; the time has come, the day is near—panic {mehumah: confusion}, and not joyful shouting on the mountains.
9 And my eye will not spare, and I will not have compassion; according to your ways I will give you what you deserve, and your abominations {toavotayikh: detestable actions} shall be in your midst, and you shall know that I am the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge} who strikes.
10 Behold, the day! Behold, it has come! The doom {hatzfirah: instrument of judgment} has gone forth; the staff {hamatteh: symbol of authority} has sprouted; and pride has blossomed.
11 Violence{hehamas: oppressive harm} has risen up as a rod of wickedness. None of them will remain—none of them, nor their multitude, nor their abundance; and no splendor{noach: nobility} will be among them.
12 The time has come, the day has arrived. Let not the buyer rejoice, and let not the seller mourn, for wrath {kharon: divine punishment} is upon all her multitude {hamonah: assembled crowd}.
13 For the seller shall not return to what has been sold, even while their lives are still among the living; for the vision is directed to the whole multitude and shall not turn back; and because of his iniquity {avon: moral guilt}, no one shall preserve his life {chayyato: personal existence}.
14 They have blown the trumpet{taqo'a: ram’s horn for assembly} and prepared everything, but no one goes to battle, for My{YHWH, Avenging Judge} wrath{kharon: fierce anger} is upon all her multitude.
15 The sword is outside, and the pestilence {dever: deadly epidemic} and the famine {raav: severe food shortage} are within; whoever is in the field shall die by the sword, and whoever is in the city, famine and pestilence shall consume him.
16 And their survivors will escape, and they will be on the mountains{harim: place of refuge} like doves of the valleys; all of them moaning, each one for his iniquity{avon: moral guilt}.
17 All hands will grow weak {tirpena: slacken}, and all knees {birkayim: dual frailty} will become like water.
18 And they shall gird themselves with sackcloth {saqqim: rough mourning garment}, and terror will cover them; and shame will be upon every face, and baldness {karchah: mourning sign} upon all their heads.
19 Their silver and their gold they will throw into the streets; their gold will become an unclean thing {niddah: ritual defilement}. Their silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge}; they will not fill their inward parts—for it was the stumbling block of their iniquity {avonam: guilt}.
20 The beauty of his ornament he set up for pride, and the images of their abominations, their detestable things, they made within it; therefore I {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} have given it to them for impurity {niddah: ritual defilement}.
21 And I {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} will give it into the hand of the foreigners for prey {baz: seized plunder}, and to the wicked of the earth for spoil; and they will profane it.
22 I {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} will turn my face away from them, and they will profane my treasured place {tsefuni: hidden sanctuary}; violent ones will enter it and profane it.
23 Make a chain, for the land is full of judgments of bloodshed {damim: acts of bloodshed}, and the city is full of violence {chamas: ruthless wrongdoing}.
24 I {YHWH, Judge of Nations} will bring the evil ones of the nations, and they will possess their houses. I will put an end to the pride {ge’on: arrogance} of the mighty, and their sanctuaries will be profaned.
25 Distress {qepadah: severe judgment} comes, and they will seek peace {shalom: wholeness and harmony}, but there is none.
26 Disaster upon disaster will come, and rumor upon rumor will arise. Then they will seek a vision from a prophet, but instruction will perish from the priest {kohen: religious leader}, and counsel from the elders {zeqenim: community seniors}.
27 The king will mourn, and the prince will wear desolation, and the hands of the people of the land will be alarmed. According to their way I will do to them, and according to their judgments {mishpeteihem: legal decisions} I will judge them; and they will know that I am the LORD {YHWH, Just Judge}.
