1 Abram {Avram: covenant recipient} went up from Egypt with his wife and all that belonged to him, with Lot accompanying him, into the Negev {Negev: southern region}.
2 Abram {Avram: covenant patriarch} held abundant wealth {kaved: substantial weight} in livestock, in silver, and in gold.
3 From the Negev he resumed his journeys, coming as far as Bethel, to the very place where his tent had first stood {battehillah: at the beginning}, between Bethel and Ai {ha'ai: ruin mound}.
4 He came to the site of the altar {mizbeach: place of offering} which he had first built there, and there Abram called on the name of the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Hearer}.
5 Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks {tson: small livestock}, cattle, and tents {ohalim: portable shelters}.
6 The land {erets: grazing territory} was not able to support them living together, because their possessions {rekhush: gathered wealth} were abundant; therefore they could not dwell together.
7 Strife{riv: hostile conflict} arose between the shepherds of Abram’s livestock and the shepherds of Lot’s livestock. At that time the Canaanite and the Perizzite were dwelling{yoshev: settled residents} in the land.
8 Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife {merivah: heated dispute} between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and yours, for we are men who are brothers {akhim: family kin}.”
9 Is the whole land not set before you? Please separate yourself {hipared: deliberate distance} from me. If you choose the left, I will go to the right {yamin: side of strength}; and if you choose the right, I will go to the left.
10 Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain {kikkar: fertile basin} of the Jordan; it was lush throughout before the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge} destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you come to Zoar.
11 So Lot chose for himself all the plain {kikar: fertile river-district} of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they separated {vayipredu: deliberate parting}, each man from his brother.
12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot lived in the cities of the plain {kikar: fertile lowland}, and he pitched his tent toward Sodom {Sedom: notorious city}.
13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked {raim: thoroughly corrupt} and were great sinners against the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge}.
14 After Lot had separated from him, the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Promise Keeper} said to Abram, “Please lift up your eyes{einekha: attentive perception} and look out from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward.”
15 For all the land that you see, I {ani: Faithful Promiser} will grant it to you and to your offspring forever {olam: unending duration}.
16 I {YHWH, Promise Maker} will cause your seed {zera: covenant descendants} to become as countless as the dust upon the land, so that if any person could number the dust of the land, then your seed too would be counted.
17 Arise, and walk {hithalekh: roam about} through the land, along its length and across its breadth, for I {YHWH, Promise Keeper} will give it to you.
18 So Abram {Avram: Pilgrim Worshiper} moved his tent, came to the oaks of Mamre near Hebron, and settled there; there he built an altar to the LORD {YHWH, Worship Recipient}.
