1 Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not borne {yaldah: given birth} him any child. She had a servant {shifchah: household attendant}, an Egyptian, named Hagar.
2 Sarai said to Abram, “See, the LORD {YHWH, Controller Of Fertility} has kept me from bearing children. Go in to my maidservant; perhaps I will be built up {ibbaneh: established as a mother} through her.” Abram listened to Sarai’s voice.
3 So Sarai, Abram’s wife, after ten years had passed since Abram had settled in the land of Canaan, took Hagar the Egyptian, her maidservant {shifkhah: female household servant}, and gave her to Abram her husband as his wife {ishah: covenant partner role}.
4 Abram went in {vayavo: marital relations} to Hagar, and she conceived. When she realized she was pregnant, her mistress {gevirtah: household superior} became despised in her eyes.
5 And Sarai said to Abram, “My wrong {khamas: harmful injustice} rests on you. I gave my female servant into your lap, and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. Let the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Arbiter} judge between you and me.”
6 And Abram said to Sarai, “Look, your slave-woman is in your hand; do to her what is good {tov: pleasing or beneficial} in your eyes.” Then Sarai afflicted {anah: harshly oppressive} her, and Hagar fled from her presence.
7 The angel of the LORD {YHWH, Compassionate Seeker} found her beside a spring {ein: natural water source} of water in the wilderness, the spring along the road to Shur.
8 And he said, “Hagar, maidservant of Sarai, from where have you come, and where will you go?” She answered, “From the presence {mipnei: from facing} of Sarai my mistress {gevirti: lady of authority}, I am fleeing.”
9 The angel of the LORD {YHWH, Compassionate Guide} said to her, “Go back to your mistress and submit yourself {hitani: deliberate self-lowering} under her hands.”
10 And the messenger of the LORD {YHWH, Generous Multiplier} said to her, “I will greatly multiply your seed {zar'ekh: future descendants}, so that it will not be counted because of abundance.”
11 And the angel of the LORD {YHWH, Attentive Hearer} said to her, “Look, you are pregnant and will bear a son; you shall call his name Ishmael, because the LORD has heard your affliction {oni: humbled suffering}.”
12 He will be a wild donkey {pere: fiercely independent} of a man; his hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand will be against him; yet he will dwell {yishkon: enduring presence} over against all his brothers.
13 So she called the name of the LORD {YHWH, Personal Self-Revealer} who was speaking to her, “You {atta: personally addressed God} are God who sees me,” for she said, “Have I even here seen after the One who sees me?”
14 For that reason the well {beer: desert water source} was called Beer-lahai-roi {lachai roi: life-giving watcher}; it is located between Kadesh and Bered.
15 Hagar {hagar: Egyptian servant} bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael {yishma'el: God hears} to the son whom Hagar had borne.
16 And Abram was eighty years and six years old {ben: age expression} when Hagar bore {beledet: birth event} Ishmael to Abram.
