And these are the territories which the sons of Israel inherited {nachalu: receiving as a heritage} in the land of Canaan, which were allotted {nichalu: administrative distribution} to them by Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the ancestral tribes of the sons of Israel.
Their inheritance was apportioned by lot, just as the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Allocator} commanded by the hand of Moses, to the nine tribes and the half-tribe {matteh: clan division}.
For Moses {Mosheh: Covenant Mediator} had given the inheritance to two tribes and to the half-tribe beyond the Jordan, but to the Levites {Leviyim: Priestly Tribe} he did not give an inheritance among them.
For the sons of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim, and they did not give a portion{chelek: inheritance share} to the Levites in the land, but only cities for dwelling and their pasturelands{umigrsheihem: open grazing} for their livestock and their possessions.
Just as the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Commander} had commanded Moses, so did the sons of Israel, and they divided the land {ha’aretz: promised territory}.
And the sons of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You have known the word {davar: divine message} which the LORD {YHWH, Promise-Giver} spoke to Moses the man of God concerning me and concerning you at Kadesh Barnea.”
I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Guide} sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land {aretz: promised territory}, and I brought him back word just as it was with my heart.
But my brothers who went up with me caused the heart of the people to melt, but I wholly followed after the LORD {YHWH, Promise Keeper} my God {Elohai, Personal Deity}.
So Moses {Mosheh: Lawgiver} swore on that day, “Surely the land on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you have fully followed after the LORD my God {YHWH Elohai: Covenant Sustainer}.”
And now, behold, the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Life-Preserver} has kept me alive, just as He spoke, these forty-five years since then the LORD spoke this word {davar: binding promise} to Moses, when Israel walked in the wilderness; and now, behold, I am today eighty-five years old.
Even today I am as strong {chazak: physical might} as I was on the day Moses sent me; my strength then is my strength now, for battle {milchamah: war campaign} and for going out and coming in.
And now, give me this mountain {har: high place} that the LORD {YHWH, Promise Fulfiller} spoke of on that day; for you heard on that day that the Anakites were there and their cities were vast and fortified. It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I will dispossess them just as He spoke.
Joshua blessed him and granted Hebron {khevron: awarded city} to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance {nachalah: permanent holding}.
For this reason Hebron remained the inheritance of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite until this day, because he completely followed after the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Promise Keeper} the God of Israel {Elohei Yisrael: National Covenant God}.
The name of Hebron in former times was Kiryat Arba, named for Arba {arba: eponymous founder}, the great man among the Anakim; and the land was at rest {shakta: cessation-of-conflict} from war.
