1 Then the heads of the ancestral households of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest {kohen: sacred official}, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the sons of Israel {Yisrael: the covenant nation}.
2 And they spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, “The LORD {YHWH, Law Giver} commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in and their pasturelands {migrash: open fields} for our livestock.”
3 And the sons of Israel gave to the Levites from their inheritance these cities {arim: urban settlements} and their pasturelands, according to the word of the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Commander}.
4 And the lot {goral: sacred selection} came out for the Kohathite families and fell to the sons of Aaron the priest among the Levites, from the tribe of Judah, the tribe of Simeon, and the tribe of Benjamin, assigning thirteen cities {arim: Levitical towns}.
5 And to the sons of Kohath, the remaining ones {hanotarim: those left over}, by lot ten cities {arim: urban centers} were allotted from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and from the tribe of Dan, and from half the tribe of Manasseh.
6 And to the sons of Gershon, from the families of the tribe of Issachar, and from the tribe of Asher, and from the tribe of Naphtali, and from half the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan{bashan: eastern highland}, by lot{goral: guided casting}, thirteen cities.
7 To the sons of Merari {Merari: Levitical division} according to their families, from the tribe of Reuben, and from the tribe of Gad, and from the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities {arim: allotted towns} were given.
8 And the sons of Israel gave to the Levites these cities and their pasturelands, as the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Commander} had commanded {ṣivvāh: authoritative instruction} through Moses by lot.
9 And they gave from the tribe of the sons of Judah and from the tribe of the sons of Simeon these towns {he‘arim: designated settlements}, which are listed by name {shēm: personal designation}.
10 And the sons of Aaron from the families {mishpechot: clan divisions} of the Kohathite from the sons of Levi had the first lot {hagoral: sacred allotment}, because it was theirs.
11 And they gave to them the city of Arba, father of the Anak {avi ha’anok: ancestral giant}, which is Hebron in the hill country of Judah, and its pasturelands {migrash: open fields} around it.
12 But they gave the field of the city and its villages to Caleb son of Jephunneh {Yefunneh: God will prepare} as his possession {achuzzah: inherited portion}.
13 And to the sons of Aaron the priest {kohen: sacred minister}, they gave Hebron and its pasturelands {migrash: grazing territory} as a city of refuge for the manslayer, and Libnah and its pasturelands.
14 And Jattir {Yattir: southern Levitical city} with its pasturelands {migrash: open common land}, and Eshtemoa with its pasturelands.
15 Holon {kholon: Levitical city}, with its pastureland, and Debir {devir: Levitical city}, with its pastureland.
16 Ain and its pasturelands {migrashim: grazing lands}, Juttah and its pasturelands, and Beth Shemesh and its pasturelands—nine towns from these two tribes {shnei hashvatim: dual tribal allotment}.
17 And from the tribe of Benjamin {Binyamin: southern clan} they gave Gibeon and its pasturelands {migrasheha: open common ground}, and Geba and its pasturelands.
18 Anathoth and its pasturelands {migrasheha: Levitical grazing}, and Almon and its pasturelands — four cities {arim: urban settlements} in all.
19 All the cities of the sons of Aaron {Aharon: high priestly line}, the priests {kohanim: those who serve at the altar}, were thirteen in number, with their pasturelands.
20 And the families {mishpechot: genealogical clans} of the sons of Kohath, the Levites who remained {hanotarim: leftover Kohathites}, received the cities of their lot from the tribe of Ephraim.
21 And they gave them the city of refuge {miklat: protective asylum} for the manslayer: Shechem with its pasturelands {migrasheha: grazing fields} in the hill country of Ephraim, and Gezer with its pasturelands.
22 Kibzaim with its pastureland {migrash: grazing area}, and Beth Horon with its pastureland; four towns {arim: designated settlements} in all.
23 And from the tribe{matteh: clan division} of Dan, Eltekeh and its pasturelands{migrash: outer commons}, Gibbethon and its pasturelands.
24 Aijalon and its pasturelands {migrasheha: communal grazing area}, Gath-Rimmon and its pasturelands—four cities {arim: administrative centers}.
25 And from half the tribe {matteh: clan division} of Manasseh, Taanach and its pastureland and Gath-Rimmon and its pastureland, two cities {arim: fortified settlements}.
26 All ten cities and their pasturelands {migrash: open fields} were allocated to the families of the remaining {notarim: designated subset} sons of Kohath.
27 To the Gershonites of the Levite clans, from half of the tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan was assigned as a city of refuge for the manslayer, with its pastureland {migrash: reserved grazing area}, and Be-Esht’rah with its pastureland—two cities {arim: hill-country settlements}.
28 And from the tribe {matteh: clan division} of Issachar, Kishion and its pasturelands {migrash: grazing territory}, Daberath and its pasturelands.
29 Jarmuth and its pastureland {migrasheha: open commons}, En Gannim {gannim: garden plots} and its pastureland—four towns in all.
30 From the tribe {matteh: hereditary territory} of Asher came Mishal with its pasturelands {migrasheha: open grazing grounds} and Avdon with its pasturelands.
31 Helqat and its pastureland {migrasheha: adjacent grazing area}, and Rehob and its pastureland—four {arba: exact count} towns in all.
32 And from the tribe of Naphtali, the city of refuge {miqlat: sanctuary for accidental killings} for the manslayer {harotzeach: one who killed unintentionally}, namely Kedesh in Galilee with its pastureland, Hammoth Dor with its pastureland, and Kartan with its pastureland—three cities in all.
33 All the cities of the Gershonites {gershuni: Levitical lineage} according to their clans were thirteen in number, along with their pasturelands {migrash: grazing lands}.
34 And to the families of the sons of Merari, the remaining Levites {hanotarim: designated subgroup} from the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam and its pastureland {migrasheha: grazing districts}, and Kartah and its pastureland.
35 Dimnah and its pasturelands {migrash: open land for livestock} and Nahalal and its pasturelands—four towns {arim: settled places} in all.
36 And from the tribe of Reuben {reuven: tribal founder}, Betser and its pasturelands {migrash: open grazing areas}, and Yahatsah and its pasturelands.
37 Kedemoth and its pastureland {migrash: grazing area}, and Mephaath and its pastureland; four cities {arba: total number} in all.
38 From the tribe {matteh: tribal division} of Gad, the city of refuge {ir miklat: asylum designation} for the manslayer, Ramoth in Gilead, with its pastures, and Mahanaim, with its pastures.
39 Heshbon and its pasturelands {migrash: grazing lands} and Jazer and its pasturelands; in all, four towns {arim: city settlements}.
40 All the cities for the sons of Merari by their families—the remaining {hanotarim: those still left} from the families of the Levites—and their lot {goralam: assigned portion} was twelve cities.
41 All the towns of the Levites within the inheritance {achuzat: allotted land} of the sons of Israel were forty-eight in number, with their pastures {migresheihen: grazing lands}.
42 These cities {heʿārîm: designated towns} shall be each with its pasturelands surrounding it, thus {kēn: thus established} for all these cities.
43 And the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Fulfiller} gave Israel all the land {haaretz: territory promised} that He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took it as their possession and lived in it.
44 And the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Promise Keeper} gave them rest {vayanach: secure repose} all around, just as He had sworn to their fathers; not one of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD gave all their enemies into their hand.
45 Not one word {davar: thing spoken/promised} from all the good things that the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Promise-Keeper} spoke to the house of Israel fell short; everything was fulfilled.
