Why are the nations in an uproar, and the peoples {uleummim: united communities} mutter plans that come to nothing {req: emptiness or futility}?
The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers conspire together against the LORD {YHWH, Supreme Authority} and against His Anointed {meshicho: Divinely Appointed One}.
Let us break apart their bonds {mosroteimo: restrictive hold} and cast off from us their cords {avoteimo: binding ties}.
The One seated on high in the heavens will laugh; the Lord {Adonai, Supreme Ruler} will treat them with contempt {yilag: hold in contempt}.
Then He {YHWH, Just Judge} will speak to them in His anger {appo: deep wrath} and in His fury He will terrify them.
Yet I {ani, the covenant LORD} have installed My King upon Zion {tsiyon: chosen royal center}, My holy mountain.
I will declare the decree; the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Speaker} said to me, “You are My Son; I {ani: I Myself, the LORD who appoints} today have begotten You.”
Ask of Me {YHWH, Generous Giver}, and I will grant the nations as your inheritance {nakhalatekha: allotted share}, and the farthest parts of the earth as your possession.
You shall break them with a rod {shevet: authoritative staff} of iron; you shall shatter {tenapptsem: utterly destroy} them like a potter’s vessel.
So now, O kings {melakhim: Earthly Sovereigns}, act with insight; accept instruction, O judges of the earth {arets: Inhabited World}.
Serve the LORD {YHWH, Majestic King} with fear {yirah: reverential awe}, and rejoice while trembling.
Kiss the Son {bar: Royal Heir}, lest He {the Son, appointed King} be angry and you perish on the way, for His anger is soon kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.
