2 Kings 15TAB

1 In the twenty-seventh {esrim vasheva: regnal dating} year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Azariah son of Amaziah, king of Judah, began to reign {malakh: took rule}.

2 He was sixteen years old {ben shesh-esreh shanah: son of sixteen years} when he became king, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jekoliah {Yekholyahu: God is able}.

3 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Moral Judge}, just as all that Amaziah his father {av: ancestral model} had done.

4 Nevertheless, the high places {bamot: hill shrines} were not removed; the people still {od: ongoing practice} were sacrificing and burning incense on the high places.

5 And the LORD {YHWH, Divine Judge} struck the king and he became a leper {metzora‘: ritually unclean} until the day of his death, and he lived in the house of separation. And Jotham, the king’s son, was over the house judging the people of the land.

6 And the rest of the acts {divrei: official records} of Azariah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles {hayamim: royal annals} of the kings of Judah?

7 And Azariah lay down with his fathers {avotav: ancestral line}, and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David {beir David: royal burial site}. Then Jotham his son became king in his place.

8 In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah {azaryahu: The Lord Has Helped} king of Judah, Zechariah son of Jeroboam {yarav’am: Increases the People} became king over Israel in Samaria and reigned six months.

9 And he committed what was evil in the sight of the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Judge}, just as his fathers had done. He did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he caused Israel to sin {hecheti: led astray}.

10 And Shallum son of Jabesh conspired {kashar: conspiratorial alliance} against him, struck him down at Ibleam, put him to death, and reigned in his place {tahtav: succession of rule}.

11 The rest of the acts of Zechariah {zekharyah: remembered by God} are written in the book {sefer: record scroll} of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

12 This is the word of the LORD {YHWH, Promise Fulfiller} which He spoke to Jehu, saying: ‘Sons {benei: descendants} of the fourth generation will sit for you on the throne of Israel.’ And so it came to pass.

13 Shallum the son of Jabesh became king in the thirty-ninth year {bishnat: regnal synchronism} of Uzziah, king of Judah, and he reigned a month {yerakh-yamim: brief reign} in Samaria.

14 And Menahem son of Gadi went up from Tirzah {tirzah: former royal residence} and came to Samaria; and he struck down Shallum son of Jabesh in Samaria and put him to death, and he reigned in his place {takhtav: succession of authority}.

15 The rest of the deeds of Shallum and the conspiracy {qashar: political scheme} he carried out are recorded in the annals {sefer: official record} of the kings of Israel.

16 Then Menahem attacked Tiphsah and everyone in it, along with its territory from Tirzah, because it refused to open {pāṭaḥ: allow entry}, and he struck all its pregnant women {hehārōṯ: bearing children}, ripping them open.

17 In the thirty-ninth year of Azariah {Azaryah: YHWH has helped} king of Judah, Menahem son of Gadi became king over Israel and reigned ten years in Samaria {Shomron: northern capital}.

18 And he did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Holy Evaluator} and he did not turn aside from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin, all his days {kol-yamav: entire lifetime}.

19 Pul king of Assyria came against the land, and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents {kikkar: large weight-unit used as tribute} of silver so that his hand {yadav: figurative support} might be with him, to support the kingdom in his hand.

20 Menahem levied{wayyotse: imposed tribute} the silver from Israel, from all the mighty men of wealthy{khayil: economic strength} means, to give to the king of Assyria fifty shekels of silver for each man. Then the king of Assyria turned back and did not remain there in the land.

21 And the rest of the words of Menahem {menachem: comforter} and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the words of the days {hayamim: royal annals} of the kings of Israel?

22 And Menachem lay down with his fathers {avotav: ancestral line}, and Pekahyah his son became king in his place {takhtav: successor position}.

23 In the fiftieth year {chamishim shanah: fiftieth year marker} of Azariah king of Judah, Pekahiah son of Menahem reigned over Israel in Samaria for two years {shnatayim: exact dual duration}.

24 And he did the evil in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Divine Judge}; he did not turn aside from the sins of Jeroboam {Yarov'am: Idol Instigator} son of Nebat, which he caused Israel to sin.

25 And Pekah son of Remaliah conspired against him with his officer {shalish: high-ranking aide} and struck him down in Samaria in the fortress {armon: fortified stronghold} of the king’s house, alongside Argob and Arieh with fifty men from the sons of Gilead. He killed the king and reigned in his place.

26 And the remainder of the words of Pekahiah {Pekahyah: YHWH Opens Eyes} and all that he did are written in the book of the divrei hayamim {divrei hayamim: royal records} of the kings of Israel.

27 In the fifty-second {chamishim ushtayim: ordinal regnal dating} year of Azariah, king of Judah, Pekah son of Remaliah became king {malakh: assumed kingship} over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned twenty years.

28 And he did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Moral Arbiter}. He did not turn aside from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he made Israel {Yisra’el: covenant nation} to sin.

29 In the days of Pekah, king of Israel, Tiglath-Pileser, king of Assyria, came and took Ijon, Abel Beth Maakah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, the Gilead, and the Galilee—all the land of Naphtali {Naphtali: tribal territory}—and he exiled them to Assyria {Asshurah: seat of the Assyrian Empire}.

30 Then Hoshea son of Elah conspired through an intrigue {kesher: political scheme} against Pekah son of Remaliah; he struck and killed him and reigned in his place in the twentieth year {esrim: regnal count} of Jotham son of Uzziah.

31 Now the rest {yeter: supplementary matters} of the acts of Pekah, and all that he did, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles {divrei hayamim: royal annals} of the kings of Israel.

32 In the second year of Pekah {Pekah: Israelite ruler} son of Remaliah, king of Israel, Jotham son of Uzziah, king of Judah, began to reign {malakh: assumed royal authority}.

33 He was twenty-five years {ben-ʿeśerîm wə-ḥāmeš šānāh: age reckoning} old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jerusha, daughter {bat: lineage identifier} of Zadok.

34 And he did what was right {yashar: upright behavior} in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge}, according to all that Uzziah his father had done.

35 However, the high places were not removed; the people were still sacrificing and burning incense on the high places. He built the upper {ʿēlîyōn: elevated position} gate of the house of the LORD {YHWH, Worship Center}.

36 Now the remainder of Jotham’s deeds {divrei: acts and accomplishments}, which he performed—are they not written in the book of the chronicles {hayamim: day-by-day records} of the kings of Judah?

37 In those days the LORD {YHWH, Judgment Sender} began to send against Judah Rezin, king of Aram, and Pekah, son {ben-remalyahu: dynastic identification} of Remaliah.

38 And Jotham lay down {vayyishkav: idiomatic death expression} with his fathers and was buried {vayyikkaver: honored interment} with his fathers in the city of David his father. And Ahaz his son reigned in his place.
