1 Woe to the complacent in Zion {Tziyon: spiritual center} and to those trusting in the mountain of Samaria {Shomron: northern stronghold}, who are counted as the foremost of the nations, to whom the house of Israel has come.
2 Cross over to Calneh {kalneh: ancient city-state} and see; go on from there to Hamath the great, then descend to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms, or is their territory {gevulam: boundary expanse} greater than your territory?
3 You who put far off the day of evil {ra: calamity}, yet bring near the seat of violence {chamas: oppressive authority}.
4 Those who lie upon beds of ivory {shen: costly ivory} and sprawl upon their couches {arshotam: banquet couches}, and who eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall.
5 The ones who sing to the sound of the lyre like David {david: musician and king} have devised for themselves instruments for song {shir: praise music}.
6 Those who drink wine from bowls {mizreqei: ritual vessels} and anoint themselves with the choicest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin {shever: collapse} of Joseph.
7 Therefore now they will go into exile at the head of the captives, and the revelry {mirzakh: festive banquet} of those who sprawl {serukhim: lounge in luxury} will be removed.
8 The Lord GOD{Adonai YHWH, Sovereign Judge} has sworn by Himself, declares the LORD, the God of hosts: “I utterly loathe the pride{ge’on: self-exaltation} of Jacob and I hate his palaces; therefore, I will deliver up the city and all that is in it.”
9 And it shall come to pass, if ten men {anashim: adult males} remain alive {yivateru: survive} in one house, they shall die.
10 And his uncle will lift him up, and the one who burns him, to bring out the bones {atsamim: skeletal remains} from the house. And he will say to the one who is in the recesses of the house, “Is there still anyone with you?” And he will say, “None.” And he will say, “Hush!” for we must not mention the name of the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Judge}.
11 For behold, the LORD {YHWH, Judicial Enforcer} commands, and He will strike the great house into fragments {resisim: shattered pieces} and the small house into fissures.
12 Will horses run on a rock, or will one plow there with oxen? For you have turned justice into gall {lerosh: bitter venom}, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood {lela'anah: bitter symbol}.
13 Those who rejoice in Lo-debar {lo-debar: nothing, place-name}, who say, “Is it not by our own strength that we have taken Karnaim {karnayim: fortified heights} for ourselves?”
14 For, behold, I am raising up against you a nation, O house of Israel, declares the LORD God of hosts {YHWH Elohei hattsevaot, Divine Warrior}, and they shall oppress {lachatsu: press hard} you from the entrance of Hamath to the brook of the Arabah.
