1 I saw the Lord {Adonai, Sovereign Judge} stationed upon the altar, and He said, “Strike the pillar-cap {hakaftor: pillar capital} so that the thresholds tremble; shatter them over the heads of all of them. And their remnant I will kill with the sword: the one who flees will not get away, and the survivor will not escape.”
2 Should they break through into Sheol {sheol: realm of dead}, from there My {YHWH, Inescapable Judge} hand will seize them; and should they go up to the heavens, from there I will bring them down.
3 If they conceal themselves on Carmel’s summit {karmel: northern mountain}, from there I will track them down and take them; and if they hide from before My {YHWH, All-Seeing Judge} eyes on the sea floor {qarqa: seabed}, from there I will command the serpent, and it will bite them.
4 If they are taken away into captivity in front of their enemies, even from there I {YHWH, Inescapable Judge} will issue orders to the sword {kherev: execution agent}, and it will kill them; I will turn My eyes toward them for calamity and not for benefit.
5 And Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH, Sovereign Judge} of hosts {tsevaot: heavenly armies}, the One who touches the land and it melts, and all who dwell in it mourn; and it rises, all of it, like the Nile, and it sinks like the Nile of Egypt.
6 He is the One who builds His upper chambers{maalotav: high tiers} in the heavens, and who has founded His vaulted span upon the earth; who calls to the waters of the sea and pours them out over the surface of the earth—the LORD{YHWH, Cosmic Builder} is His name.
7 “Are you not to Me like the Cushite people, children of Israel?”—declares the LORD {YHWH, Impartial Judge}. “Have I not brought Israel up {he'eliti: caused to ascend} from the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Caphtor, and Aram from Kir?”
8 Behold, the Lord GOD’s {Adonai YHWH, All-Seeing Judge} eyes are directed toward the sinful kingdom {mamlakah: royal rule}, and I will wipe it away from the surface of the ground; only, I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, declares the LORD {YHWH, Remnant Keeper}.
9 For look, I {YHWH, Sovereign Sifter} am giving the command, and I will shake the house of Israel throughout all the nations, as grain is shaken in a sieve; and not a pebble shall fall to the ground {arets: the soil}.
10 All the sinners of My {YHWH, Covenant Judge} people will die by the sword {cherev: war judgment}—those who say, “The evil will not reach us or come upon us.”
11 In that day I will set up again the fallen booth of David, and I will mend its breaches {pirtzeihen: torn openings}, and I will set up its wreckage, and I will rebuild it, like the days of long ago {olam: ancient past}.
12 So that they may take possession of the remnant {sheerit: surviving portion} of Edom and of all the nations on whom My name is invoked, declares the LORD {YHWH, Promise Fulfiller} who brings this about.
13 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD {YHWH, Sure Speaker}, and the plowman will draw near to the reaper, and the treader of grapes will draw near to the one who sows the seed {mosekh: seed-sower}; the mountains will drip sweet wine, and all the hills will melt.
14 And I {YHWH, Fortune Restorer} will turn back the exile {shevut: forced removal} of My people Israel; they will rebuild cities that were desolate and settle in them; they will plant vineyards and drink their wine, and they will make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 And I will plant {nata: firmly establish} them on their soil, and they will not be uprooted again from their land that I have given them, says the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Land-Giver}.
