1 In the year of King Uzziah’s death, I saw the Lord {Adonai, Sovereign Master} seated upon a lofty throne lifted high, and the train of His robe {shulav: garment’s fringe} filled the temple.
2 Seraphim {serafim: fiery heavenly beings} stood above Him {Adonai, Supreme Sovereign}; each had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
3 They called out to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts {YHWH Tsevaot, Supreme Commander}; all the earth is filled with His glory {kevodo: radiant splendor}.”
4 The doorposts {ammot: structural posts} at the thresholds shook when the voice of the one calling rang out, and the house was filled with smoke {ashan: visible cloud}.
5 And I said, “Woe to me, for I am undone; for I am a man of defiled lips {sefatayim: speech organs}, and I dwell among a people of defiled lips. For my eyes have looked upon the King, the LORD of hosts {YHWH Tzvaot, Supreme Commander}.”
6 One of the seraphim {serafim: fiery angelic beings} flew down to me, carrying a coal {ritspah: glowing coal} in its hand that it had taken from the altar with tongs.
7 And he touched my mouth and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity {avon: moral guilt} is removed, and your sin is atoned {tekuppar: purged before judgment}.”
8 I heard the voice {kol: divine message} of the Lord {Adonai, Sovereign Master} saying, “Who will I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I; send me.”
9 And He {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} said, “Go and say to this people, ‘Hear, indeed, but do not understand {tavinu: grasp fully}; see, indeed, but do not perceive.’”
10 You {YHWH, Divine Judge} make the heart of this people calloused {hashmen: figurative hardening}, make their ears heavy, and shut {hasha: close tight} their eyes, so that they do not see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, turn back, or be healed.
11 Then I said, “How long, Lord {Adonai, Sovereign Ruler}?” And He said, “Until the cities are devastated with no inhabitant, the houses are empty of people, and the land is made utterly desolate {shemamah: total ruin}.”
12 The LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Remover} will remove humanity {adam: mankind} far away, and abandonment will be great in the middle of the land.
13 Even if a tenth {asiriya: surviving portion} remains in it, it will again return and be consumed; like the terebinth and the oak, whose stumps remain after they are felled, so the holy seed {zera`: remnant} will be its stump.
