1 And it happened after this that David {David: Anointed King} struck the Philistines and subdued them; and he took Gath and its towns {benot: dependent settlements} from the hand of the Philistines.
2 And he struck down Moab, and Moab became servants to David {David: anointed monarch}, bringing tribute {minchah: obligatory offering}.
3 And David struck Hadadezer, king of Zobah, at Hamath {khamatah: frontier fortress}, as he went to establish his hand {yad: figurative authority} in the Euphrates River.
4 And David captured from him one thousand chariots {rekev: military vehicles}, seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers. And he hamstrung {vayaker: disabled warhorses} all the chariot horses, but left enough for one hundred chariots.
5 And the Arameans of Damascus came to help {la'azor: to assist} Hadadezer, king of Zobah {Tzovah: Aramean kingdom}, and David struck down twenty-two thousand men in Aram.
6 And David placed garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became servants to David, bearing tribute; and the LORD {YHWH, Deliverer of David} secured success for David in every venture {halach: each journey}.
7 David took the gold shields {shiltey: defensive equipment} that were upon the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem {Yerushalayim: sacred city}.
8 And from Tivchat and from Kun, cities of Hadadezer, David took an abundance {rabbah: large quantity} of bronze. With it, Solomon made the bronze Sea, the pillars, and the bronze vessels {kelei: ritual vessels}.
9 And Tou {Tōʿû: regional monarch} king of Hamath heard that David had struck down all the army {cheil: organized troops} of Hadadezer king of Zobah.
10 And he sent Hadoram his son to King David to ask him for peace {shalom: friendly greeting} and to bless him because he had fought with Hadadezer and struck him, for Hadadezer had been a man of wars with Tou {to'u: Hamath ruler}, and all vessels of gold, silver, and bronze.
11 King David also consecrated{hiqdish: set for worship} them to the LORD {YHWH, Holy Receiver}, along with the silver and the gold that he carried off from all the nations: from Edom, and from Moab, and from the sons of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek.
12 And Abshai struck down Edom {Edom: Edomite people} in the Valley of Salt {ge hamelach: salt basin}, eighteen thousand.
13 And David set garrisons in Edom, and all Edom became servants to David. And the LORD {YHWH, Victor Giver} saved David wherever he went {halakh: journeyed and acted}.
14 And David {David: Anointed King} reigned over all Israel, and he was doing judgment and righteousness {tsedaqah: covenant faithfulness} for all his people.
15 And Joab son of Zeruiah was appointed over the army{al-hatsava: delegated command}, and Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was recorder{mazkir: royal secretary}.
16 And Zadok son of Ahitub and Avimelekh son of Abiathar were priests {kohanim: authorized mediators}, and Shavsha was scribe {sofer: court recorder}.
17 And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was set over the Kerethites {hakereti: elite guards} and the Pelethites, and the sons of David were chief officials at the side of the king {melech: royal ruler}.
