1 Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned {malakh: exercised authority} fifty-five years in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Hephzibah {Cheftzi-bah: My delight is in her}.
2 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD {YHWH, Moral Standard}, like the abominations {toavot: repulsive deeds} of the nations the LORD had driven out from before the sons of Israel.
3 And he returned and built the high places {ha-bamot: sacred worship sites} that Hezekiah his father had destroyed, and he erected altars to Baal and made an Asherah pole, just as King Ahab of Israel had done. And he prostrated himself to all the host {tseva: celestial assemblies} of the heavens and served them.
4 And he built altars in the house of the LORD {YHWH, Sanctuary Owner}, of which the LORD said, “In Jerusalem I will put My name {shemi: divine reputation}.”
5 And he built altars to all the host {tseva: heavenly powers} of the heavens in the two courts of the house of the LORD {YHWH, Sanctuary Owner}.
6 And he made his son pass through the fire and practiced soothsaying {onen: omen interpretation} and divination, and he dealt with mediums and spiritists. He greatly increased doing evil in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Justice Arbiter} to provoke Him.
7 And he set the carved image of Asherah which he had made in the house {bayit: sacred residence}, of which the LORD {YHWH, Temple Guardian} had said to David and to his son Solomon, “In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel, I will put My Name forever.”
8 And I will not again cause the foot of Israel to wander from the land that I gave to their fathers, only if they keep doing everything that I commanded them and the entire law {torah: binding instruction} that my servant Moses {Mosheh: commissioned leader} commanded them.
9 But they did not listen, and Manasseh led them astray to do evil {hara: moral corruption} more than the nations whom the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge} destroyed before the sons of Israel.
10 And the LORD {YHWH, Speaking Judge} spoke by the hand of His servants the prophets {naviim: divine spokesperson}, saying
11 Because Manasseh king of Judah has done these abominations {hatoevot: repulsive practices}, he has done more evil than all that the Amorites who were before him did, and he has also caused Judah to sin with his idols {begilulav: detestable images}.
12 Therefore thus says the LORD God of Israel {YHWH Elohei Yisrael, National Judge}: Behold, I am bringing disaster {ra'ah: divinely-sent calamity} upon Jerusalem and Judah so that all who hear of it will have both ears tingle.
13 And I {YHWH, Justice Executor} will extend the measuring line of Samaria and the plumb line of the house of Ahab over Jerusalem; and I will wipe Jerusalem like one wipes a dish {hatsallachat: cleansing vessel}, wiping it out and turning it upside down.
14 And I {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} will abandon the remnant of my inheritance {nachalati: allotted possession} and I will give them into the hand of their enemies, and they will become plunder and spoil to all their enemies.
15 Because they have done the evil {hara: covenant rebellion} in My {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} eyes, and they have been provoking Me from the day their fathers went out from Egypt until this day.
16 And also Manasseh shed very much innocent blood, until he filled Jerusalem from one end to the other {peh lāp̄eh: end-to-end}, apart from his sin which he caused Judah to sin, to do evil in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge}.
17 And the remainder of the words of Manasseh, and all that he did, and his sin {chatat: moral transgression} which he sinned, are they not written in the book of the chronicles {hayamim: records of events} of the kings of Judah?
18 Manasseh lay down {shakav: euphemistic death} with his fathers, and he was buried in the garden {gan: royal estate} of his house, in the garden of Uzza. Then his son Amon reigned in his place.
19 Amon was twenty-two years old when he began to reign {bemolcho: accession term}, and he reigned for two years in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Meshullemeth, the daughter of Charutz from Jotvah {Yatvah: local town}.
20 And he did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Moral Judge}, just as Manasseh his father {av: Patriarchal Ancestor} had done.
21 He walked in all the ways that his father had walked, served the idols {gillulim: abominable images} that his father had served, and bowed down {hishtachavah: reverent prostration} to them.
22 And he forsook the LORD God of his fathers {YHWH Elohei Avotav, Covenant Judge}, and did not walk in the way {derekh: prescribed course} of the LORD.
23 And the servants {avdei: Court Attendants} of Amon conspired against him and put the king to death in his house {beit: Royal Residence}.
24 But the people of the land struck down all the conspirators {kosh'rim: plotted traitors} against King Amon, and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his place {takhtav: substituted succession}.
25 And the rest of the words {divrei: recorded accounts} of Amon, which he did—are they not written in the book {sefer: written record} of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
26 He was buried in his grave {bikvurato: ancestral tomb} in the garden of Uzza, and his son Josiah reigned in his place {takhtav: as successor}.
