1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus {Christos Iesous, Source of Life} by the will of God {Theos, Sovereign Caller}, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus.
2 To Timothy, beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father {Theos Pater, Source of Mercy} and Christ Jesus our Lord {Christos Iesous Kyrios hemon, Mediating Lord}.
3 I thank God {Theos, Faithfully Served One}, whom I serve as my ancestors did, with a pure conscience, as I have unceasing remembrance {mneia: mindful mention} of you in my prayers night and day.
4 Longing {epipothon: intense yearning} to see you, remembering your tears, so that I may be filled with joy {charas: deep inner gladness}.
5 When I call to mind the sincere faith {anupokritos: without pretense} that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother {mamme: family elder} Lois and in your mother Eunice, I am convinced that it is also in you.
6 For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God {Theos, Gracious Giver} that is in you through the laying on of my hands {cheiron: symbolic commissioning}.
7 For God {Theos, Empowering Giver} did not give to us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of sound judgment {sophronismos: disciplined self-control}.
8 Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord {Kyrios, Sovereign Master}, nor of me, His prisoner; but share in suffering for the gospel in line with the power of God {Theos, Giver of Strength}.
9 Who {Theos, Gracious Caller} saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus {Christos Iesous, Preexistent Mediator} before eternal times.
10 But now this has been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ {Iesous Christos, Redeeming Deliverer}, Who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel {euangelion: saving message}.
11 For which I was appointed {etethen: placed by authority} a preacher {keryx: public herald}, and an apostle, and a teacher.
12 For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that He {Theos, Faithful Guardian} is able to guard what has been entrusted to me {paratheken: entrusted charge} until that day.
13 Hold to the pattern {hupotuposin: established model} of sound words which you heard from me, in faith and love that are in Christ Jesus {Christos Iesous, Source Of Faith}.
14 Guard the good deposit {paratheken: entrusted treasure} entrusted to you through the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Divine Indweller} who dwells in us.
15 You know this, that all those who are in Asia {Asia: Roman province} have turned away {apestraphesan: broken fellowship} from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.
16 May the Lord {Kyrios, Rewarder of Faithfulness} grant mercy to the household {oikos: extended family circle} of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and he was not ashamed of my chain.
17 But when he arrived in Rome {Rhome: imperial city}, he diligently {spoudaios: earnest effort} sought me out and found me.
18 May the Lord {Kyrios, Merciful Judge} grant that he may find mercy from the Lord in that day {hemera: future judgment}. And you know very well how many things he served in Ephesus.
