1 And a great sign {semeion: prophetic marker} was seen in heaven: a woman wrapped in the sun, with the moon beneath her feet, and on her head a crown {stephanos: victor’s wreath} of twelve stars.
2 And being with child {en gastri: in the womb}, she cries out in labor pains {odinousa: birth agony} and is tormented in order to give birth.
3 And another sign {semeion: symbolic vision} appeared in heaven; see—a formidable red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, and upon its heads seven diadems {diademata: royal crowns}.
4 And his tail swept away a third of the stars of heaven and hurled them to the earth; and the dragon {drakon: monstrous serpent} positioned himself before the woman who was about to give birth {mellouses tekein: on the verge of delivery}, so that when she bore her child he might devour it.
5 And she gave birth to a son, a male child appointed to shepherd every nation with a rod of iron; and her child was caught up to God {Theos, Sovereign Protector} and to His throne {thronos: royal seat of authority}.
6 The woman fled into the desert to a place prepared by God {Theos, Sovereign Protector}, so that they might sustain her there for one thousand two hundred sixty days {hemeras: Counted Days}.
7 And war {polemos: heavenly battle} broke out in heaven: Michael {Michael: archangelic commander} and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought.
8 And they did not prevail {ischysen: were not strong enough}, nor was their place found in heaven {ourano: celestial court} any longer.
9 And the great dragon—the ancient serpent—who is called the Devil {Diabolos: slandering enemy} and Satan, the one who deceives the whole world {oikoumene: inhabited earth}, was thrown down to the earth; and his angels were thrown down with him.
10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven saying, “Now salvation and power and the kingdom of our God {Theos, Sovereign Deliverer} and the authority of His Christ {Christos, Anointed Ruler} have come, because the accuser of our brothers has been cast down, the one who accuses them before our God day and night.”
11 They prevailed over him by the blood of the Lamb {arnion: Slain Redeemer} and by the word of their testimony, and they did not hold their lives {psuche: whole self} dear, even to the point of death.
12 Therefore rejoice, O heavens {ouranoi: celestial realms} and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath {thymon: burning rage}, knowing that he has a short time.
13 And when the dragon {drakon: hostile accuser} observed that he had been cast down to the earth {ge: inhabited world}, he persecuted the woman who had given birth to the male child.
14 And to the woman were given the two wings of the great eagle {aetos: powerful rescue aid}, so that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, away from the presence of the serpent {opheos: persecuting enemy}.
15 And the serpent {ophis: hostile deceiver} discharged water like a river from his mouth behind the woman {gynaikos: vulnerable target}, so that he might cause her to be carried away by its current.
16 And the earth {ge: created realm} helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river {potamos: overwhelming threat} that the dragon had thrown out of his mouth.
17 And the dragon {drakon: cosmic adversary} grew furious with the woman, and it departed to wage war against the remainder of her offspring, those who observe the commandments of God {Theos, Holy Lawgiver} and who bear the testimony of Jesus {Iesous, Proclaimed Savior}.
