1 And Elijah the Tishbite, from among the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the LORD God of Israel {YHWH Elohei Yisra’el, Covenant God} lives, before whom I have stood, there shall be no dew or rain these years except by my word {devari: spoken decree}.”
2 And the word {devar: divine message} of the LORD {YHWH, Message Sender} came to him, saying,
3 Go from here and turn eastward for yourself, and hide{nistar: remain concealed} in the brook Cherith{kerit: seasonal ravine}, which is east of the Jordan.
4 And it will be that you will drink from the brook, and I {YHWH, Provider} have commanded the ravens to sustain you {kalkel: provide nourishment} there.
5 So he went and did according to the word {dabar: spoken command} of the LORD {YHWH, Command Giver}. He went and settled by the brook Kerith, which lies east of the Jordan.
6 And the ravens {orvim: ritually unclean scavengers} brought him bread and meat in the morning and in the evening, and he drank from the stream {nachal: small watercourse}.
7 And it happened after some days that the brook {hannāḥal: intermittent stream} dried up because there was no rain in the land {bā-ʾāreṣ: the territory of Israel}.
8 And the word of the LORD {YHWH, Message Giver} came to him, saying {lemor: speech marker}:
9 Arise and go to Zarephath {tsarfathah: Phoenician town} which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow {almanah: woman bereft of husband} there to sustain you.
10 And he arose and went to Zarephath {tsarfatah: coastal town in Phoenicia}, and he came to the entrance of the city, and behold, there was a widow gathering sticks {etsim: fuelwood}. And he called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a vessel, and I will drink.”
11 And she went to take it, and he called to her and said, "Please{na: courteous entreaty} bring me a piece of bread in your hand{yad: personal delivery}."
12 And she said, “As the LORD your God {YHWH Elohekha, Promise Keeper} lives, I do not have a cake; I have only a handful of flour {kemach: fine ground grain} in the jar and a little oil in the jug, and behold, I am gathering two sticks so that I may prepare it for my son and myself, and we shall eat it and die.”
13 And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear {tir’i: experience dread}. Come and do as you have said, but first make for me a small cake {ugah: round loaf} from there and bring it to me, and afterward you shall make for yourself and for your son.”
14 For thus says the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Sustainer}, the God of Israel {Elohei Yisrael, Covenant Lord}: The jar {kad: storage jar} of flour will not be used up, and the jug of oil will not be lacking, until the day the LORD gives rain upon the face of the ground.
15 So she went and did according to the word of Elijah {Eliyahu: prophetic authority}, and she, he, and her household ate for days {yamim: unspecified duration}.
16 The jar of flour was not consumed, and the jug of oil did not run out according to the word of the LORD {YHWH, Miracle Provider} which He spoke by the hand of Elijah {Eliyahu: My God is YHWH}.
17 And it happened after these things that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became sick {chalah: fell ill}; and his illness was very severe until there was no breath {neshamah: life spirit} left in him.
18 And she said to Elijah, “What is there between me and you, man of God {ish haElohim: divine envoy}? Have you come to remind me of my iniquity {avoni: moral wrongdoing} and to put my son to death?”
19 And he said to her, “Give me your son.” And he took him from her bosom {cheik: lap or embrace}, brought him up to the upper room {aliyah: upper chamber} where he was staying, and laid him on his bed.
20 And he called to the LORD {YHWH, Divine Hearer} and said, “O LORD my God {YHWH elohai, Prayer Responder}, is it also on the widow {almanah: vulnerable woman} with whom I am sojourning, that You have brought harm {hareotah: distressful act} by causing her son to die?”
21 And he stretched himself upon the boy three times and cried out to the LORD {YHWH, Wonder Worker} and said, “O LORD my God {Elohai, Answer to Prayer}, please let the soul of this boy return within him.”
22 And the LORD {YHWH, Prayer Hearer} heard the voice of Elijah, and the soul {nefesh: life essence} of the boy returned within him, and he lived.
23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down from the upper room {aliyah: upstairs chamber} into the house, and gave him to his mother. And Elijah said, “See, your son is alive {chai: restored to life}.”
24 And the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God {Elohim, Divine Messenger}, and the word of the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Revealer} in your mouth is truth.”
