1 And King Solomon {shelomo: Peaceful Ruler} was king over all Israel {yisra'el: covenant nation}.
2 And these were the officials {sarim: chief ministers} who belonged to him: Azariah son of Zadok, the priest {kohen: sacred minister}.
3 Eliahoreph and Ahijah, the sons of Shisha, were scribes{soferim: royal secretaries}; Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, was the recorder{mazkir: official chronicler}.
4 And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the army {tsava: military force}, and Zadok and Abiathar were priests {kohanim: ministers of sacred duties}.
5 And Azariah son of Nathan was over the overseers {hanitzavim: chief administrators}, and Zabud son of Nathan was priest and companion {re’eh: trusted counselor} to the king.
6 Ahishar was over the house {bayit: palace administration}, and Adoniram son of Abda was over the forced labor {hammas: conscripted labor}.
7 And for Solomon {Shlomo: Peaceful King} there were twelve officers {nitzavim: appointed administrators} over all Israel, and they sustained the king and his household; each was assigned to supply for one month in the year.
8 And these are their names: Ben-Hur in the hill country {behar: elevated land} of Ephraim {Efrayim: tribal territory}.
9 Ben-Deker was in Makaz, Shaalbim, Beth-Shemesh {shemesh: sun} and Elon {eilon: oak grove} Beth-Hanan.
10 Ben-Hesed {ben-khesed: administrative lineage} was in Arubboth; to him belonged Sokho {sokho: district center} and all the land of Hepher.
11 Ben-Avinadab was over all the region {naphat: administrative district} of Dor; Taphath, the daughter of Solomon, was his wife {ishah: covenant partner}.
12 Baana {ba‘anā’: regional governor}, the son of Ahilud, was over Taanach {ta‘naḵ: fortified city}, Megiddo, and all of Beth Shean, which is beside Zarethan, below Jezreel, from Beth Shean to Abel-Meholah, and as far as beyond Jokmeam.
13 Ben-Geber was in Ramoth Gilead {ramot-gilad: border fortress}; the villages of Jair son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead, were his, and the district of Argob, which is in Bashan, included sixty great cities with walls and bronze gate bars {nechoshet: copper alloy}.
14 Ahinadab {ahinadav: brother is noble}, son of Iddo, was in Mahanaim {maḥănāyîm: settlement east of the Jordan}.
15 Ahimaaz in Naphtali {naftali: tribal region}; he also took Basemath, daughter of Solomon, as wife {ishah: marital partner}.
16 Baana, son of Hushai, was in Asher {Asher: coastal tribal region} and in Bealoth {Bealoth: border district}.
17 Jehoshaphat the son {ben: Hebrew construct for lineage marker} of Paruah was in Issachar {Yissakhar: tribal territory}.
18 Shimei son of Ela {ela: paternal ancestor} was in Benjamin {vinyamin: tribal region}.
19 Gever son of Uri, in the land of Gilead {gilad: frontier region}—the land of Sihon king of the Amorites and Og king of Bashan—was the only governor {natsiv: regional administrator} in that land.
20 Judah and Israel were as numerous {rabbim: great in number} as the sand on the seashore; they ate, they drank, and they rejoiced {semechim: expressed great joy}.
21 And Solomon was ruling over all the kingdoms from the River {hanahar: Euphrates} to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt. They were bringing tribute {minchah: gifts of homage} and serving Solomon all the days of his life.
22 And the food {lechem: daily provision} for Solomon {Shlomo: royal provider} for one day was thirty kors of fine flour and sixty kors of meal.
23 Ten stall-fed cattle {berim: fattened animals}, twenty pasture-fed cattle, and a hundred sheep {tson: domestic flock}, not counting deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fattened fowl.
24 For he ruled {rodeh: exercised dominion} over all the region {ever: territory} on this side of the Euphrates River, from Tiphsah to Gaza, over all the kings of that region, and peace was his from all his borders round about.
25 And Judah and Israel dwelt in safety {labetach: confidence of security}, each man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon {Shlomo: Peaceful Ruler}.
26 And Solomon had forty thousand stalls {urvot: horse pens} for his chariots and twelve thousand horsemen {parashim: cavalry soldiers}.
27 The officials {hanitzavim: appointed overseers} provided for King Solomon and for all who came to King Solomon’s table, each in his month; nothing was lacking {yaadaru: failed to arrive}.
28 And they brought the barley and the straw for the horses and for the swift steeds to the place {maqom: supply station} where each man was, according to his assignment {mishpat: appointed order}.
29 And God {Elohim, Wisdom Giver} gave Solomon wisdom and very much understanding, and a breadth of heart {lev: inner mind}, as the sand that is on the seashore.
30 And the wisdom of Solomon was greater than the wisdom of all the sons of the east {kedem: eastern tribes} and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt {mitsrayim: Nile kingdom}.
31 And he was wiser than all men, than even Eitan the Ezrahite, Heman, Kalkol, and Darda the sons of Machol; and his name {shem: reputation} was in all the nations around {saviv: surrounding regions}.
32 And he spoke {vayedabber: set forth} 3,000 proverbs {mashal: pointed sayings}, and his songs were 1,005.
33 And he spoke about the trees from the cedar in Lebanon to the hyssop {ezov: wall-grown herb} that grows out of the wall; and he spoke about the animals, the birds, the creeping things, and the fish {dagim: aquatic creatures}.
34 And people came from all the nations {amim: global peoples} to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all the kings of the earth {malkei: sovereign rulers} who had heard of his wisdom.
