1 All the people of Judah took Uzziah{Uzziyahu: royal heir}, and he was sixteen years old, and they made him king in place of{takhat: succession marker} his father Amaziah.
2 He constructed Eloth {Eilot: Red Sea port} and restored it to Judah after the king lay down with his fathers {avotav: royal ancestors}.
3 Uzziah was sixteen years old when his reign began, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years {va-chamishim u-shtayim: reign length}. His mother’s name was Yekhilyah, Jekoliah {yekhilyah/yekholyah: alternate form}, from Jerusalem.
4 He lived in a way that was right in the eyes of the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge}, following the pattern of everything his father Amaziah {Amatsyahu: Yah Is Mighty} had done.
5 And he set himself to seek God {Elohim, Guiding Source} in the days of Zechariah, the one understanding in visions {bir’ot: revelatory sight} of God, and as long as he sought the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Sustainer}, God made him prosper.
6 He took the field and fought the Philistines, and he broke through the wall {khomat: fortified boundary} of Gath, as well as the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod; then he built cities {arim: border towns} in Ashdod and among the Philistines.
7 And God {Elohim, Mighty Helper} helped him against the Philistines, against the Arabs who lived in Gur-Baal, and against the Meunites {me‘unim: desert tribe}.
8 And the Ammonites gave tribute {minchah: official offering} to Uzziah, and his name went as far as the entrance to Egypt, because he became exceedingly strong {hechezik: attained great strength}.
9 Uzziah built towers {migdalim: defensive watchpoints} in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, at the Valley Gate, and at the Angle, and he fortified {vayechazzekem: reinforced defenses} them.
10 And he built towers in the wilderness and dug many cisterns {borot: rock-cut reservoirs}, for he had much livestock; and he had farmers and vinedressers in the lowland and on the plain and in the mountains and in Carmel, because he loved the soil {adamah: agricultural ground}.
11 And for Uzziah there was a force {chayil: organized army} performing war and going out in battle divisions in the number of their muster {pekudatam: official count}, under Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer, under Hananiah, one of the king’s officers.
12 The total number of the heads of the fathers’ houses’ {ha-avot: ancestral clans} for the mighty men {gibbor: valiant warriors} was 2,600.
13 And under their command was a force {cheil: organized military group} of 307,500 warriors of valor {chayil: martial excellence} to assist the king in battle against the enemy.
14 Uzziah {uziyahu: king of Judah} prepared for the entire army shields, spears, helmets, coats of armor, bows, and slings {kelayim: military projectile weapons}.
15 And he made in Jerusalem devices {khishbonot: mechanical war engines}, the invention of an inventor, to be on the towers and on the corners for shooting arrows and great stones; and his fame went out to a far distance, for he was marvelously helped {lehen’azer: divine support} until he was strong.
16 But when he became strong, his heart rose up to his destruction {hashchit: impending ruin}; he acted unfaithfully against the LORD his God {YHWH Elohim, Sole Worship Authority} and went into the temple of the LORD to offer incense on the incense altar.
17 Then Azariah the priest came in after him with eighty priests of the LORD {YHWH, Sanctuary Defender}, men of valor {chayil: mighty strength}.
18 And they stood against King Uzziah and said to him, “This does not belong to you, Uzziah, to offer incense to the LORD, but to the priests—the sons of Aaron—who are consecrated to offer incense. Leave the sanctuary {mikdash: sacred place}, for you have acted unfaithfully; and there will be no honor for you from the LORD God {YHWH Elohim: Divine Judge}.”
19 But Uzziah became angry, with a censer {mikt’ret: ritual vessel} in his hand for burning incense; and while he raged at the priests, leprosy sprang up on his forehead in the presence of the priests in the house of the LORD {YHWH, Holy Sovereign}, beside the incense altar.
20 Then Azariah the chief priest and all the priests turned toward him—and there he was, metzora {metzora: serious skin disease} on his forehead—so they hurried him out from there and he himself hastened to leave because the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge} had afflicted him.
21 And Uzziah the king remained afflicted with leprosy until the day he died; he lived in a separate house, leprous, for he was cut off from the house of the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Judge}. And Jotham his son was over the king’s house, judging {shofet: one who governs and renders justice} the people of the land.
22 Now the remaining matters {veyeter: additional records} of Uzziah, from first to last, were written by Isaiah {Yeshayahu: Yahweh Saves}, the son of Amoz, the prophet.
23 And Uzziah {Uzziyyahu: royal figure} lay down with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the burial field that belonged to the kings, for they said, “He was a leper {metsora: ritually unclean}.” And Jotham his son reigned in his place.
