1 Then the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge} said to Noah, “Go into the ark—you and all your household—for I have observed that you are righteous {tsaddiq: morally upright} before Me in this generation.”
2 From every clean {tahor: ritually fit} animal you shall take for yourself seven pairs {shivah shivah: paired sevens}, a male and his mate; but from the animals that are not clean, take two, a male and his mate.
3 Also take from the birds {meof: winged creatures} of the heavens seven pairs, male and female, so as to keep alive {lechayot: preserve living beings} seed upon the face of all the earth.
4 For after seven more days, I {YHWH, Righteous Judge} will bring rain upon the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe out {umachiti: total erasure} all living substance that I have made from the face of the ground.
5 So Noah acted in line with everything the LORD {YHWH, Divine Commander} had commanded {tsivah: given directive} him.
6 Now Noah {Noach: Pre-Flood Patriarch} was six hundred years {shanah: measure of age} old when the waters of the flood came upon the earth.
7 Then Noah {Noach: righteous survivor} went into the ark {teivah: divinely appointed vessel}—he, his sons, his wife, and the wives of his sons with him—because of the waters of the flood.
8 From the clean land creatures {behemah: domestic land creature} and from the land creatures that are not clean, and from the birds, and from everything that creeps {romes: continual creeping motion} upon the earth,
9 They came to Noah into the ark in pairs, male and female, just as God {Elohim, Life Sustainer} had commanded {tsivvah: authoritative instruction} Noah.
10 And it happened that, when the seven days {yamim: marked periods of time} had passed, the waters of the flood {mabul: overwhelming deluge} came upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of the life of Noah, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month—on this very day—all the springs of the great deep{tehom: subterranean abyss} broke open, and the windows{arubot: heavenly floodgates} of the heavens were opened.
12 And the rain {geshem: overwhelming storm} fell upon the earth {erets: entire dry land} forty days and forty nights.
13 On that very day, Noah {Noach: obedient survivor} and Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons, went with them into the ark {tevah: vessel of survival}.
14 They and every beast {chayyah: wild creature} according to its kind, and all the livestock according to its kind, and every creeping thing that moves on the earth according to its kind, and every bird according to its kind—every winged bird {kanaf: outspread wing}.
15 And they came to Noah {noach: righteous survivor}, into the ark {tevah: rescue vessel}, in pairs, from all flesh in which there was the breath of life.
16 And the entrants, male and female from every living creature {basar: all fleshly beings}, went in just as God {Elohim, Faithful Commander} had commanded him; and the LORD {YHWH, Mighty Guardian} shut him in.
17 And it happened that the flood {mabbul: overwhelming deluge} was forty days upon the earth; the waters {mayim: chaotic forces} multiplied and lifted the ark, and it rose up above the earth.
18 And the waters {mayim: overwhelming flood} grew strong and increased greatly upon the earth, and the ark {tevah: large box vessel} went along on the surface of the waters.
19 And the waters {mayim: surging floods} prevailed exceedingly upon the earth {erets: whole inhabited ground}, and every high mountain under all the heavens was covered.
20 The waters {hamayim: overwhelming deluge} prevailed fifteen cubits {ammah: ancient length unit} upward, and the mountains were covered.
21 All flesh {basar: creaturely life} that moved on the land perished—winged creatures, herds, wild beasts, every creeping creature {sherets: small moving creature} that scurried across the ground, and all mankind.
22 Everything on the dry land that had the breath of life {chayyim: life from God} in its nostrils {appayim: physical life-channel} died.
23 And every living thing {yequm: entire living order} that was on the face of the ground was wiped away—humankind, livestock, creeping things, and the birds of the heavens; they were erased from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ark {tevah: protective vessel}.
24 And the waters {mayim: relentless flood} continued to dominate the earth for one hundred and fifty days {yom: fixed duration}.
