1 Since Christ {Christos, Suffering Redeemer} suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same intent {ennoia: purpose of mind}, because the person who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin.
2 So that you may no longer spend the rest of your time in the flesh for human desires, but instead for the will {thelema: determined purpose} of God {Theos, Holy Moral Guide}.
3 For the time already gone by is enough for you to have carried out the will of the Gentiles {ethne: non-Jewish peoples}, when you lived in sensualities, desires, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and unlawful idolatries {eidololatreia: false-god worship}.
4 In this matter they are astonished that you do not run with them into the same flood {anákhysin: overflowing excess} of debauchery {asōtías: wasteful vice}, and they speak evil of you.
5 They will give an account to Him {Theos, Impartial Judge} who stands ready to judge both the living and the dead {nekrous: physically deceased}.
6 For this reason the gospel was proclaimed even to the dead, so that they might be judged by human standards in the flesh, but might live according to God {Theos, Righteous Judge} in the spirit {pneuma: spiritual realm}.
7 But the end {telos: final consummation} of all things has drawn near; therefore be sober-minded and be watchful for prayers {proseuchas: requests to God}.
8 Above all, keep your love for one another fervent {ektene: deeply stretched}, because love covers a multitude of sins {hamartion: moral failings}.
9 Be hospitable {philoxenoi: loving toward strangers} to one another without grumbling {goggysmou: concealed complaints}.
10 Each one, just as he has received a gift, use it to serve {diakoneo: self-giving service} one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God {Theos, Gracious Giver}.
11 If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God {Theos, Empowering Provider}; if anyone serves, let him serve as from the strength which God supplies, so that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ {Iesous Christos, Glory Mediator}. To Him belong the glory and the dominion for the ages of the ages. Amen.
12 Beloved, do not be startled by the fiery ordeal {pyrosei: intense refining trial} that occurs among you for the purpose of testing {peirasmon: proving of faith}, as though something foreign were happening to you.
13 But rejoice {chairete: deliberate gladness} in proportion to the extent that you share in the sufferings of Christ {Christos, Suffering Redeemer}, so that you also may rejoice with exultation when His glory is revealed.
14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ {Christos, Rejected Messiah}, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God {Theos, Glory Bestower} rests upon you.
15 Let none of you suffer {pascheto: undergo hardship} as a murderer {phoneus: one who murders}, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a meddler.
16 But if he suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; instead, let him glorify God {Theos, Worthy Of Honor} in that name {onoma: covenant identity}.
17 For the time has come for judgment to begin from the house of God {Theos, Holy Judge}; and if it begins first with us, what will be the end for those who disobey the gospel {euangelion: saving message} of God?
18 And if the righteous {dikaios: legally upright person} is saved with difficulty, where will the ungodly {asebes: deeply irreverent one} and the sinner appear?
19 Therefore, let those who are suffering according to the will of God {Theos, Sovereign Sustainer} entrust their souls {psychas: whole lives} to a faithful Creator in doing good.
